Plan on completing one of the items on my bucket list. ND is the only state out the 50 I have not visited. Would like some good sites to visit. Like history, wildlife and scenery. Know that Roosevelt NP is one that is good, but don't have many other ideas. Will be going mid Sept. Coming from Michigan UP across northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Driving west across US Hwy 2 and return east via I-94 will give you a good overview of the state. i have just returned from Rugby where we shot abandoned farms. Unfortunately they are open only to those working with a particular photographer. Also you may have missed the wheat harvest which was in full swing last week.
Keep your eyes open. Check the internet for things around the Devils Lake region. Get off the main roads, but be careful. Many roads are gravel.
Your path from the Upper will take you through Duluth. Your dates may see activity at the Hawks Ridge fly-away. They have a web page where you can get information. Because of Lake Superior northern hawks swing west to pass south at Duluth. During the active days (wind direction favors some days) the ridge area looks like an artillary range. If you going out west date is too early then maybe you going home date might be better.
Going across Minnesota in mid September might offer some fall foliage opportunities. North Dakota is pretty much flat farm land, but do consult that States web page. They must have stuff I don't know about.
Medora is pretty and the badlands of ND in western ND. On HWY 36 is a small town called Lake Williams. There is a concrete horse barn that was never completed on top of a hill you can walk up to. It is very cool. Bismarck has Fort Lincoln. Lake Sacakawea..lots of neat places.
Devils Lake interesting lake swallowing up towns and highways and farmland,,,Turtle Mountains,,,International Peace Garden,,,Minot,,,Lake Sakakawea,,,Williston,,,Theodore Roosevelt National Park north and south unit,,,Bismarck and Lake Oahe,,,like others have said take the country highways,,,hardly any traffic and vistas and a sky that seems to go on forever....

I was out there last month, going to Glacier Natl Park. That is an obvious pic source. I regret not being able to get any star photos, being out west in open sky country. It was always hazy and overcast due to forest fires farther out west so that killed that opportunity during my trip. Maybe you can get some good star photos while you are out there.
I was born in ND but smart enough to move out. Much more to see in SD.

Don't know if the Medora Musical is still being presented in Sept., but it is well worth watching and good photo ops. Also the pitchfork fondue preceding the show is tasty.

Theodore Roosevelt NP was never on my radar to visit, UNTIL we just happened to pass through the South Unit. We stopped but did not have time allotted to do it justice. Wish we could have 'done' the North Unit as well. Quite a distance between the two units.

Minot Air Force base is best viewed in the rear view mirror. I spent one winter there---couldn't go see anything because of too much snow.
