You could also use a disk-scanning app to get a better idea of what you have. I use "Scanner." http://steffengerlach.de/freeware/

The properties page for My Pictures should give you the total number of folders and files in your My Pictures folder. To break it down by folder you would have to check each folder. If I check mine it shows over 100 folders and the total number of files (photos) in all of the folders, but not the individual totals. I would have to check each folder for that number.

Right. That 168 number is mostly folders, but there are a few pictures I haven't put into folders yet.

In File Explorer click on This PC. In the search box in the upper right enter *.jpg to find all the jpg files on the computer. The total number will be in the bottom left. Then repeat for other image formats you use.

If you have multiple drives connected go to the individual drive instead of This PC

In my pictures file set I have a number of different folders, for example, Family, under this folder you would find a number of folders dated by year, and in each year there are folders of various events. Sort of like a file cabinet. The cabinet has four drawers and each drawer has a folder... Last time I looked I had 1 tb of photos in "My Pictures". I am working on the 2nd tb with the huge file created by the D810 in raw format. Going to looking very soon for an 5 or 6 tb drive. The only issue I have with these large drives is the search time it takes to find a file. Other than that I think we are lucky to have these large drive available at a reasonable cost.

Yes. I use one called Everything - also free.

Yes, "Everything" is an excellent program. I use it probably 4-5 times a day to search for specific files. Once it indexes (which doesn't take all that long on my 30 TB of storage), a search is lightning fast.

For a more sophisticated search (a word inside of a PDF file, for instance), I use "Copernic Desktop," (https://www.copernic.com/en/products/) It is a little pricy but is valuable often enough to offset that... for me.

In any event, either of these programs are good at counting the number of a certain type file. A search of *.jpg would produce a list of image files that can be sorted by Path. A search in "Everything" gave me (within a split second) a list of 559,376 JPG files. Scary to see at first but it includes every image internal to most software; Icons, images in Help, Menu Items, for instance.

Ah, of course. It's early, and I haven't finished my first mug of coffee. I was trying it from the desktop icon.

Actually, it'll work from the desktop icon also. Just right-click on that and choose "Properties".

Or left-click on it (once, to select it), and press "Alt-Enter" (standard shortcut for "Properties")

Gee, I don't feel so bad now. Only have 7,952 in Elements catalogue. Not sure if that is counting the versions or not.
