I've done this before, but I don't recall how. I have My Pictures, with dozens of folders and images under that. How can I find out how many pictures are contained within My Pictures.

It would be nice to know more about your equipment but here is how you find out the number of files and folders within windows:

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Highlight "My Documents" (May be simply "Documents") and "Right Click."
3. Select "Properties."
4. Under the "General" tab will be the line entitled "Contains:." There you will see the files and folders count.

You can do these steps for each individual folder to narrow it down further.

How many of those files would be images, I have no clue.

In Windows Explorer, the directory name on the left, right mouse click and select properties. It will count ALL files in all sub-directories also.
(Sorry, Ron's comment was not there when I started, I'm a slow typer.)

Ah, of course. It's early, and I haven't finished my first mug of coffee. I was trying it from the desktop icon.

47,861 - time to start deleting!

Thanks!

This is true for EACH catalog. I have two catalogs with ~100,000 in each. So I would have to add the two together to get an actual "total." Of course, this only counts the images that are tracked by LR.

How long will it take to look at all those images and decide what to keep?

For anyone intending to pass their photos on to kids or grandkids, it is probably a good idea to selectively keep a drive specifically for this purpose. I don't know of anyone who will go through 50 - 100 thousand images without getting fed up and deleting the whole bunch. Better still, print the good ones as 4x6 and fill 1 shoe box. We know they are more fun to go through. :)

Almost a year, if I don't sleep and work 24/7. I guess I'd better get started.

Why bother? If you don't delete as you go it doesn't matter so long as you can find stuff. Disk is cheap, and doesn't take up much space.

Cataloging could be worthwhile. You never know when you might want that slightly blurry photo of Auntie Ethel going her step dance strip routine on a table top at the pub on St. Patrick's day!

In Windows it is simple, and there are several ways to do it. You could find the folder in Windows Explorer, right click on it and then left click on properties. That will give you the file count. The easier way is to just open the folder by left clicking on it. In the bottom left corner it should give you an item count. That would be the number of photos.

Right. However, inside My Pictures I have dozens of other folders - Cars, Travel, etc. My Pictures has only 168 files.

The properties page for My Pictures should give you the total number of folders and files in your My Pictures folder. To break it down by folder you would have to check each folder. If I check mine it shows over 100 folders and the total number of files (photos) in all of the folders, but not the individual totals. I would have to check each folder for that number.
