I use the Panasonic Lumix and it works well as a point and shoot with good image quality. It will fit in a shirt pocket if you have a travel shirt or safari shirt. Only downside is there is no external lens cap so you have to be careful not to damage the diaphragm blades that close over the lens elements when the camera is turned off.

Try the Lumix ZS 100, it has a 10X zoom, larger sensor than most point and shoots, an electronic viewfinder, and will fit into most pockets. It is the most useful camera that I have
ever had---the only thing lacking for me is a hot shoe.

I wanted a small, pocket camera with a view finder and gps for an extended Europe trip. I did a LOT of research and came back to another Sony. I bought the Sony HX 90V. I bought it from Focus Camera, they had the best price. It has a view finder, zoom, and takes great photos. I would put them up with any photos. It is compact and great for travel.

"Substantial" doesn't mean "sufficient", "adequate", or "necessary". A lot of consumers of photographic products think they need "substantial", when they don't. It's like visiting an "all you can eat" buffet only because it is available, not out of necessity.

Yes !!! Try the Sony HX80, I have one and LOVE it, great photo quality too. And its only about $300

I have a Sony RX100V4 that I got for my recent trip to Paris. Fits in my pants pocket, takes phenomenal photos! I took several hundred photos with it using the "auto" setting.
I did not use the built in flash even at night and got great photos! I have posted several of my Paris photos on uglyhedgehog.
It does not have a zoom equivalent to my zoom on my Fuji T1; but, it does not have the weight and bulk either! For me, it was a good choice. I took the Sony hiking, to dinner, and to various castles/chateaus.

My F3 with motor drive and 80-200f4 zoom fits in my pocket but it is a film camera. (I had to have my pants modified, and I do get some strange stares from some of the women I pass along the street!)

Ditto. I have the Lumix ZS50, have used it a lot for a couple of years, agree about the durability. It has a huge optical zoom range (20X), wide angle to telephoto, 14.1 megapixels, fast autofocus, manual options, and shoots decent video for a point-and-shoot.

Narrow down that "substantial zoom" idea and stick with practicable and manageable. Not every subject is on the other side of the galaxy or on the end of your nose. Long zooms in pocket cameras mean small sensors and limits to print size if printing is an objective.

I have a Leica "pocket" that is only 7 mpxl with a zoom and 12 yrs old having given me good service (C-Lux3). Leica no longer makes a reasonably priced small camera.
I am looking at a Sony 19 mpxl with a Leitz lens for $350.00 to replace. A "Coolpix" is also an option. I call this my dinner party camera.
Any thoughts?

SONY DSC HX80 30X Optical zoom Electronic pop up view finder and also LCD screen. Excellent camera and it will fit in you pocket.
