Texasbadger is right.. Backblaze.. Unlimited data for $5/Month (might be higher now). Used them for years and currently have 8.7 GB stored with them. I'm a mac user so don’t know how well it works with pc's but runs in the background with zero effect on performance. Backs up only data not apps..

I don't want something for nothing! I had just switched over after trying a couple different ones 6 months ago and thought I could finally relax. Heck NO. Tired of being nickled and dimed in a big way for everything.

My cable bill recently increased $46.00/month, with no new features, so I know exactly what you are saying. Having worked in technology for 30+ years, computing/technology is deeply embedded in my life. I use my systems for lots of stuff. Certainly more than my photographic pursuits. I know I must have a copy of all my data somewhere other than my house, which is subject to destruction by wind/fire. I've used CrashPlan (after thoroughly checking them out) for over a year. And, they have done exactly what they said they would do. They have been professional in every sense of the word. And, now, they need more money. This happens with every commercial effort.

I was giving a thumbs up to the philosophy of the thread, not intending for it to be a slam against anyone. If you took offense, I'm truly sorry. I empathize with you. This stuff happens regularly, and it does get aggravating. I just know CrashPlan has been a very good choice, and I don't want to go through another researching exercise to find another company that is as good, then go through the weeks-long process of getting my data moved to the new site. I simply want to spend my time doing other things. That convenience is gonna cost me more money, in the end, but convenience is the highest-priced thing we buy.

Again, if I offended you, I apologize.

I use Zenfolio. About $60/year, no limit on the number of photos.

I've tried you few months ago and found it too quirky for local and cloud backup and cancelled.

I've been very pleased with both my Synology NAS devices and am about to expand to a third, and much larger, device as my workload recently picked up. All of my NAS storage is RAID 1, with an additional copy off-site. Best of luck to all with this.

This is not just a small increase.... it is BIG! I'm just so tired of being charged up the arse for everything.

I guess my thinking is that they are not the only game in town, and to pay $120/yr for decent off-site backup is not terrible in the big scheme of things. Hell, how much do we spend on gear, maintenance, the computer itself, upgrades, travel to photo destinations (gas, wear and tear on car, parking, access fees, tolls, meals away from home, etc etc etc), $120 a year is not horrible. You could always self-manage your own backup and use that $120 towards a couple of durable hard drives, then you wouldn't have to think about it for a few years. But when you fill those up, you will be at the same point you're at now, facing yet another expense to safeguard your data. It will still be cheaper to use a service that charges $120/yr than self-managing.

I have two external drives, but I'm frustrated by the poor backup software available. I have been using Acronis and their restore function is crappy.

I'm considering an NAS also. WD sells one for <$200 without the drives. Even adding the drives you are still <$350 or $400. That's also a way to have access to all your files even from any computer or tablet or phone you want.

If you are on Windows, there are a number of very good backup software solutions. I have been using SyncBack, which is fully featured, can be configured to mirror, backup or hybrid copying, you can use it with some cloud solutions, and their free version is all you need The paid versions have extra functionality for enterprise wide backup needs, but for modest setup its' perfect.

A NAS is NOT a backup. It is a storage device that provides redundancy for active files that can be accessed by multiple devices. It often includes an internet-accessible IP address that can be accessed with a securely encrypted connection.

Avoid that WD box, it's terrible. Synology is considerably better, great software, rock solid performance and excellent support, and many models are scalable (can be extended to add more drives).

You are correct at $120.00.... for me though, it says "per device", and I like to backup my externals. This makes the yearly sum quite a bit. I am trying to contact them and they are overwhelmed so I have to wait to be sure this is correct. My other half is about to retire so I will have to be careful with my choices. :-)

By device, they mean computer. If you have 10 external hard drives connected to one PC, that counts as one device.
