I'm so disappointed that after all of my searching and researching here and other places, I chose another dud backup system. CrashPlan is forcing the Home Plan owners to switch to Small Business and then will charge you $10.00 per month, PER DEVICE! They also suggest you can switch over to Carbonite for home use. The problem with Carbonite is there is a cap of 1T and they don't offer Prime service (to back up more than 1 device) unless you are on Windows.
Very sad they always want more money!!

Just saw that too. I started their 'free' 30 days.

Hardly the "way of Adobe"... Crashplan has ALWAYS been a subscription - as is ANY cloud based storage program, other than the free teasers of a few GB to get you in....

Anyway, I have been using CRashplan for quite awhile now, and am good till 3/2018 with my subscription, but will need to move to something else before that date....

Carbonite is a possibility for me I am sure, and I just read on their site that they offer unlimited storage space - I am over 1.4 TB online, so anything less than unlimited is not gonna fly.

Where did you see a cap of 1 TB?

The cap is on basic and they don't offer the other two plans for MAC customers. The new subscription of CrashPlan goes up substantially when the old subscriptions end.

I just got that same message. I think it's time to move to an NAS system of my own.

Not seeing any cap, and I see three plans for PC & Mac....what am I missing???

I skipped the "special deal" site, and just went right to Carbonite's site - 59.99, unlimited....and two other plans on the pricing page I posted above.

Not sure where you are getting your info, but....

Why are you folks expecting everything to be free when you enjoy getting paid for your own work?

Do you think having a server on line is free? If so, why are you not setting one up?

Better yet, why don't you work for free and offer to work more for the same price?

Change of policies? Big deal. You should have expected it.

The answer is Amazon S3 (or Google, or Microsoft or Apple). You want a BIG cloud service with solid financials that isn't going away, and Amazon owns the cloud market with as much market share as the next 5 providers combined. There are 3 plans (depending on how often you access) the least expensive being Glacier at $.004 per GB/month.

Code 42 (CrashPlan) started as a group of guys doing accounting for large businesses. They are quite professional. The data storage system they set up was extensive enough to allow for other customers to 'store' their data via internet connection. They offered a quality service at a reasonable price. So much so, they now have to put up with support for too many 'small' users. I take it they are simply trimming their customer base by dropping the "Home" service. Seems logical, in light of things.

I believe Carbonite has an 'unlimited' service, and for those CrashPlan 'Home' customers who don't want to migrate to the 'Business' plan, they are recommending Carbonite.

EVERYBODY ALWAYS wants more money. Fact of life. :-)

Don, just curious if the new pricing dictates this, or is there some technical reason?

There is a lot of discussion about this topic currently, one service that is getting a lot of recommendations is

https://www.idrive.com/get-idrive-cloud-backup

They are currently offering 90% off if you are switching providers for the first year.

I personally can not endorse them as I don't use off site backups but they seem to be relatively straight forward to work with.

Amazon's Glacier service may also be a cost effective alternative, but it is slow to restore from.

There is some rather technical discussion on alternatives here, if you're a sensitive soul you may be best reading at +5 (at -1 the comments section can be a sewer).

Looking at the cost, it basically doubles my storage costs, so moving to something else at the current monthly costs is attractive.

I like the thought of Amazon Glacier - unlimited but pay for what you use at .004 per GB, there are several S3 compatible backup systems so, the client side is not a big deal.

Carbonite is also attractive - just download a client, install and have at it.

Then again, if it remains at $10.00 a month for Crashplan, that is not really that bad, especially with not needing to reupload all the data. I have some time left before I need to decide, so will have to think it through a bit.

Certainly, the price doubled and that caused me to stop and think. Still, not a lot of money. I REALLY didn't want to have to go through another upload, so I migrated. By the time I finished that process on their site, the software client had already been updated on my PC.

Good luck in your search/decisions. If you go with Amazon, I'd like to know how you like it.

I like the use of a device to backup/restore with iDrive - a seed drive can make all the difference for the initial backup for sure! I think I looked at them before I initially went with Crashplan a year or so back.

Backblaze, $50/year, unlimited data, does not require Java.
