I just had UPS pick up the second Roku Ultra from me to return to Amazon because they are being shipped with bad video cards. The video has a pink overlay on the entire screen. Amazon initiated the return and paid for it. It was all their doing. A couple of hour later I get an email form Amazon with this statement:

Refund total: $110.37**
Refund will appear on your Visa in 3-5 business days.

* This is an advanced refund. If we don't receive the item listed above, we may charge your original payment method.

In other words if UPS loses a shipment that they initiated and paid for (quite possibly failed to insure it) and they know it was picked up by UPS and they don't receive it, they are going to try to recharge my card. In doing so, it would be fraud; yet they openly admit to threatening to commit a crime? Corporations are worse and worse all the time. In a way, I'd like to see them try to charge my card if they do not receive it. They know UPS has it; that is the thing here; I have no control what happens to it from here and yet they think they can hold me responsible?

Pure FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt).

Amazon did not get to be a wide, wide river of commerce by being a bad business! My family and I have Prime. We shop Amazon all the time, and have never had a problem they did not make right.

What Amazon did was issue you a "First scan refund." That means as soon as UPS scans the package your refund is issued. The statement about charging you if they do not receive the item refers solely to the situation where what you sent back is not what is was supposed to be.

Name another business that will refund you more than $100 BEFORE they get the item back - you can't.

You were the recipient of world-class customer service and you are actually complaining about it. You must be a miserable old coot!

You are all making this assumption but that is not what they wrote in their note. Their note implies if UPS loses the package they will try to charge me for it; it does not say "if the package does not contain the item you are supposed to be returning". Go back and read it. All I can say for all those that have not had problems with Amazon is that you have been as lucky as the stars. I have had multiple problems with them. And to answer those that say go somewhere else; sometimes that choice is not the option.

It's amazing how many here blindly trust corporations when they have been screwing us blind all our lives. It's as ignorant as trusting the government.

No!!! They don't imply that at all!! THEY MEAN IF YOU DONT SEND IT!!! If you have so much trouble with amazon stop buying from them. Or stop complaining about them.

Did Amazon manufacture that product? If not, why are they the ones responsible for a defective card? Should it not be the manufacturer?

In the long run yes, Roku is responsible for their products. But if you know anything about consumer law, a retailer is responsible for what they sell. If Amazon has chosen to sell junk and junk products (and they sell every piece of cr*p made on the planet), then they are responsible for taking care of their customers. It's a line of responsibility that goes down the shoot. As a consumer, and for what I buy, the person I buy it from is responsible to me for up to 30 days (varies by state; some give more time than others). Then the distributor is responsible to the retailer and then the manufacturer is responsible to the distributor. It's a chain of command that after so much time has passed it comes down to between the buyer and the manufacturer; that's where warranties come into play. Some retailers will try to post notices limiting their responsibilities to their customers but they cannot violate state consumer protection laws which cannot violate federal consumer protection laws. It's unbelievable how many people that on this site, and in their senior years, have no idea of these laws even existing. A smart consumer knows the laws that protect them; that's all I can say, really. Educate yourselves!

Burke:

Let's put it this way; I've had to go to the federal consumer protection bureau more than once to force Amazon to do the right thing. Many mention they have Amazon prime, which only pays if you do a lot of business with then; which I do not do. I buy from them only when they offer the best deal. May they treat their prime customers differently; I do not know. What I do know is that I am not going to pay them $100 a year to stop violating my rights and the law. Isn't that called extortion? Now you know how they got so big and powerful!

I've never had an issue with Amazon, I'm a Prime member and do at least a dozen purchases a month!

Read above; I answered that question! And it's not grousing; threatening to do an illegal act is not grousing!
