As with any outdoor photography, weather is catch as catch can, or the luck of the draw. I worked as an architectural Photographer and no matter how good your data or consultant, good weather was trial and error. That still means I will have a camera set up for the forthcoming event, hope springs eternal...

I agree with Ralph. Am recording NASA during the day and will shoot at the Chicago Botanic Garden that has several nice open fields, even though we will only get 87% coverage. However I am most interested in shooting the many other people around me who will be impacted in many different ways by the experience. Then when we return to South Carolina in late September my camera club friends can share their several pictures (they will get 100% coverage). As photographers we all have our interests and this is a great opportunity to fulfill many of these interests.

Will it be cloudy? I'll know when the eclipse occurs.

The last two times we had partial eclipses in Connecticut, the weather was very, very cloudy. It got dark during the eclipse, but you couldn't see anything happen. The upcoming eclipse will only be partial in CT, but will it be cloudy???? How about where you are????

I wonder how many people are traveling someplace to see the the total eclipse, maybe reserving overpriced accommodations, and won't end up being able to see it.

too damn many, the prediction is that the state will come to a screeching halt at about 11:38 AM when it is over and everyone is trying to leave.

the state police are already saying that I-5 will come to a stand still as people will stop on the freeway to watch.

for me, I live on a east facing street on a big hill. I will stroll up the hill a ways with my lawn chair and a beer and sit in the sun, IF IT IS NOT RAINING,which actually has a 50- 50 chance of happening!

Doesn't matter to me - it will be worth it for the chance to see totality for 2+ minutes. If I see it great, if not nice trip; nothing ventured nothing gained.. I saw a partial one years ago and it was spectacular. Time to try the full thing.
Today I took a chance and went to the beach to watch a Space X launch. Weather turned out to be great nay the launch was worth it.

Heard this many times before. It's an argument against photographing any popular event or landmark. But the counter argument is that it's my take on the shot, I do it for fun or profit, and it's my business. If I ask for advice on how to do it, please provide that advice. Personally, I don't care if anyone has taken that shot before me; it's my turn and I'm taking my shot.

Always take the shot today if you possibly can. And like you have said, even if it has been taken a billion times, the same angle and lighting, is your turn to take it. Yes, all of us will try to find a different take on it. But it is always the time to take it.

I took photos of a ghost town in northern New Mexico. It was several years before I was able to go back. I went to where I thought I had seen it, but nothing was there. We gased up at the next major town south of where we had stopped. As I paid, I asked about the ghost town. I learned that we had stopped at the right spot, but a high school party's bonfire got out of control and burned it all down.

There really is no tomorrow; shoot today.

I'll be in Tenn, hoping for good weather. I plan to try to get some shots just so I can look at them later, share them, and be able to say to myself, "I was there." I also plan to take advantage of the professional pics that will be available. This is a literal once in a lifetime opportunity for me, so I will happily drive for six hours for a fifty fifty chance of seeing it.
