Captured images yesterday w/500mm on aD300 @Americas Cup and World Trials in Newport- guy next to me w/P&S said "Man, I wish I could capture those images like UR doing" - Yep, it was worth carrying all that heavy expensive gear!
For greater creative expression than a P&S allows, plus - and this is a really HUGE bonus - when I go to a public event, a large camera slung over each shoulder and the bags of gear allow me entry to places you'd just never be able to go for pictures with a simple P&S (most security {etc} and famous ppl you may want to get photos of take one look, just ASSUME you're a press photographer and let you shoot :) - it also helps if you smile and ask them questions the press would ask ... if anyone asks you're 'freelance')

He probably can't tell the difference between a Château Lafite Rothschild and a bottle of moonshine either......

I can't believe you asked this question.
If I could find a camera as small as yours that would do what my cameras do then I won't lug them around.

What is it that you guys gain from all of the stuff you drag around as opposed to my new Sony P&S with the advanced electronics? I certainly don't get it, but I'm sure that you are about to bitch at me about the old school stuff.
I liked the camera so well that I bought a second. Let the sentimental technology thoughts fly ... He went that away ===>

I wonder what people say when they see this guy with a big grin on his face walking around with identical cameras, one in each hand shooting away!
To give the uniformed a reason to ask.
life is a continuous process,so is photography......
wow what a great discussion ! love some of these replies [swamp gator } about a year ago i bought a p7000 p&s only to take into concerts, because we cant take our [profesional]cameras into most venues. the camera just does not perform as good as a d300s or a d700. way to much noise at 1100 iso. and i think i paid about $800 bucks ! the one thing i do like the p7000 for is nighttime street photos because of the grainy shots at high iso in b&w. but ill tell you , theres nothing like comming out of the woods with a 600F4 on a tripod slung over your shoulder and the looks on peoples faces ! to me thers no comparison >

Just my opinion: All P&S cameras, especially the small ones, leave a lot to be desired as in no control. My dslr cameras on the other hand off me total control over all the functions.
I also have a choice of lenses for various shooting situations and I find that I can get those shots that just wouldn't have been gettable with a small camera... that's why.

Can you imagine the look on the bride and groom's faces if you showed up to their wedding with a point and shoot. PRICELESS.

That's not quite true - my Lumix LX3 offers control over everything. Aperture, ISO, shutter speed, white balance (custom and temperature selectable), focus mode etc.
Having said that it wasn't really aimed at the P&S brigade - it's aimed at the photographer who wants something pocket-sized.
Whilst image quality isn't too shabby, it's nowhere near up to the abilities of my Nikon D7000:

S-A-T-I-S-F-A-C-T-I-O-N!!!!! Hey tokus, looks like you stayed too long at Gasparilla.
Actually "Tarkus" was a pretty good album by ELP back in the day.
Well...as long as you had plenty of weed. At least those were the rumors I heard.
Don't know if that's where troll boy took his user name from though. Could be he found his dad's old record collection I suppose.
