Stick with Nikon batteries and you should have no issues. The use of third party batteries, should they cause a problem or damage your camera you may be SOL if Nikon refuses to repair it because the damage was caused by using a third party battery. Think of them as cheap insurance rather than expensive batteries. I'm also of the impression that the chip sets in the newest Nikon cameras can identify what batteries are being installed into those cameras hence the reason they don't work.
LOL, the next topic will be the use of filters for protection.

The best way to get a good deal on a Nikon battery:
Next time you want to go out to eat, don't. Eat at home then calculate your savings on the meal you ate at home versus the restaurant plus the gas you did not use. Now apply the money not spent to the cost of a Nikon battery and you just bought a Nikon battery for the price of a meal.

I guess I don't understand why someone is looking to save money on a battery when they buy the most expensive APS-C.
I was thinking the same thing.
I use Kastar on my D7100. So far no problem
I have used Kastar on my D7100 with no problem.

Have used third party batteries (wasabi) for my D7000, but these will not work with my new D500. Are there any third party (read cheaper) EN-EL15 batteries that will work in the D500?
Even if you own older Nikon EN-EL15 batteries Nikon will exchange them because some will not work in the D500. I sorry, I have to ask, you buy the top of the line camera and want to put CHEAP batteries it in. Are you serious?

I have three Nikon batteries. They are tough as nails run forever, totally reliable. I would never think of putting any other battery in my Nikon.
you bought a $1000 camera, why skimp on the battery
Sorry! I can't understand spending all of that money on a camera or lens and skimping on the quality of the battery or filters respectively!
As long as the batter is made in the USA and the same mah, third party is ok......Nikon does not make their own batteries. Someone else makes them and puts Nikon info and name on it.....and they also make other peoples batteries and put their info on them....I've been working with batteries for years, even in power houses....The problem with batteries blowing up and catching fire, is the battery in that piece of equipment is undersized...Just make sure it is the same mah or more.
In my D300 and D600 I used Promaster batteries for years with no problems.
