Rich, I'd always heard the term "honey dippers" applied to the contractors who cleaned out cesspools when they got so plugged up they wouldn't drain. Never lived in 'outhouse country" so never even about that cleaning. Both must have been nasty jobs. The one time I remember my father having to have the cesspool emptied at my boyhood home when I was about 12 or 14; it was a smelly proposition and the contractor rigged a bucket hoist to haul up the "stuff" and dump it into a wheelbarrow. They must have then moved it to the driveway and transferred it to a tank truck, but I don't remember that part of the job at all.
I do remember the contractor doing it on a Saturday and only accepting payment in cash.

This was also a term used in the service when the the men were in training in the field and the outhouses had to be cleaned out and some poor Private had to do the job....Rich

Hell of a place this Ugly Hedge Hog
. I've learned more about honey dippers in the last 24 hours, or even in the past 70+ years than, I have had any need to know.
BigWolf40, I guess that's one more reason why I went through ROTC and became a Commissioned Officer.
I don't remember seeing any out houses when I was active duty, slit-trenches galore, but no out houses!
Very, very interesting, Angela, and beautifully photographed!
Really neat shots, Angela! Must've been fun to visit!
