Memories and family history----

We like to go back occasionally and view our family history, things we've done, places we've been. Have over 60 years of photo albums I took for our children and grand children to see. Added these to the family history photo album going back many years, starting with a few shots taken of my Gr-Gr-Grandfather in the Civil War. Now use primarily electronic photo display units and update them as desired. Also, when we get really memorable photos, print them out and add them to the photo album. Label each so someone can get back to the digital original in the future. I've also scanned significant (to me) negatives to add to a digital collection. These are primarily of F1 and other sports car races like CanAm and TransAm, and sports/classic import car shows we have gone to in the past. Particularly when "famous" drivers were in the picture (Jackie Stewart, Nikki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi and many more too numerous to name). Majority have meaning only to our family but I hope my future family will enjoy going back and viewing some of these "historical" photos, as I have viewing our family photos from the late 1800's to current times. Many have the snapshot "Martha by the Monument" look, meaningful only to us, but I'm glad of the memories from the time it was taken.

I do enjoy my images after the shot. Some hang on the walls and a lot grand kid photos go to their parents. Sometimes, usually when loading a new batch, something will remind me of previous shots and I will review them. Occasionally I am surprised by how good they look but often I see how I could have improved the shot or tweaked it in pp. It is fun to review and a learning process.

If you are a photographer presumably you enjoy going out with your camera and taking pictures. Maybe you enjoy processing them and presenting them to a client or showing them to friends or entering them in a competition. You may even enjoy posting your best shots here on UHH or on one of the web sharing sites and basking in the compliments from fellow photographers or friends. If you are a professional you almost certainly enjoy collecting your check and depositing it in the bank.

Is that it?

Do you ever go back and look at your creations just for the pleasure of seeing them? Do you have a batch of favorites that you 'visit' because you are proud of them and they make you feel good or just to re-live old memories? How do you display them - framed on the wall? slide show on your computer? album or photo book? Facebook?

At the urging of a friend, I've started to use Pro Show to make slide show videos of myself, family, and friends. So far it's filling in the gap of what to do, what to do.

I enjoy taking the photo and the post processing. I print some that my wife likes to keep in a photo album and show friends and family the up dated ones added. Very often I will go through prints on a bad weather day and reprocess to see if I can improve and to try new techniques and software. I like to see how I have improved over the years as a photographer and keep the bad and look at them and compare them to present day photos. It is a real boost to my self confidence to see how much I have improved. I liked retouching negatives and prints back when I was in business in the days of film. Much more difficult but I have found the things I learned in the film days not only in taking photos but in retouching really help me in this digital day. Another thing I often do with photos is supplying my sister-in-law and my best friends wife copies of prints they have seen or ask me if I have of a particular thing they need to paint. They are both very good artist and use them in their paintings. It is always enjoyable to see the finish results.

I print my best shots as 8x10s, and they go in an album. I show them off to close friends.

I looked at your football pictures that you posted and was very impressed. The quality, focus, and action shots are outstanding. it is not easy to take action photos and have them in focus but you have some wonderful images that draw you into the picture and tell a story. Thanks for posting them.

My wife and I travel a lot and much of my photography is done on these trips. After each trip I put together a slideshow set to music (using ProShow Gold). We have a monitor set up in a small den and we like to put the slide shows on when we are enjoying a glass of wine before dinner. I also make prints of some of our favorite pix that we display on the wall in this den. We rotate the pix once in a while.

One other thing I do with my non-travel pix is that each year I donate two framed pix to a charity raffle. I've actually been quite surprised at the interest these have generated because I consider myself to be a fair, but not great, photographer.

I have some of them located about the house, I do look at the files on occasion, if I think the image can be improved or a different ideas come to mind to try with them.
I also post to my Facebook page, and I have a website.

I love the process of taking and editing photos. Occasionally I share photos on this website, and I love the positive feedback i receive. Sometimes I think we are too kind with our critiques, but I like it anyway. I make photo books regularly of family trips with grandchildren and occasionally make photo books of trips to neat places that are very photogenic. Occasionally I will have a photo printed and hang it on a wall in my house (usually in my small home office, which is the only space I have authority to decorate as I please. Sometimes I discard printed photos and replace them with what I consider better photos. I rarely review old photos on my computer, although I have been telling myself for years that if I review old photos I will probably discard over 50% of them.

I did not feel comfortable as a member of my local photography club, so I resigned. Other than a few photography "get togethers" to which I am invited, my photography is a solitary endeavor. I would love to make friends with others with whom I could share my enjoyable hobby, but it's a very enjoyable hobby anyway.

I go back and look at some of my pics from when I first started with a DSLR. Then I delete most of them. What I thought was an amazing photo, is no l0nger up to my standards.

A plug for using a personal website. I have one on smugmug, and really enjoy maintaining it -- organizing new topics, swapping pictures in and out, etc. I mainly do it for my own pleasure. But my family appreciates it when I post pictures of the grandchildren, and my friends occasionally look at other pictures.

I have digital photo frames of various sizes, and add my favorites to them, so they are always changing.

Once in a while, I will think of a photo that I enjoyed, pull it back up, and add it to one of the SD cards in one of the frames.

I include favorite shots from favorite wedding couples, not as a sales tool, but I love wedding photography, and some couples will always make me smile when I think of them, so yeah, I have shots of random weddings popping up alongside my family photos. I want to be surrounded with things that make me happy.

Before digital, I had the same thing going with prints in frames, but didn't have the wonderful option of the photos changing, and popping up at random. I'm telling you, I think it could be the magic key to happiness. Photos on the wall that make you happy, and they keep changing, and reminding you of things/people/places that you love.

Since retiring and moving into a condo, I have a lot more time to spend on enjoying photography. I love taking landscape pictures and general interest pictures and then playing with them in Photoshop to try to bring out the best quality. I am inspired by other people's work so I post some pictures on Instagram (under bobburk3) to get feedback and find other photographers or artists that I can follow. There are some amazing images and artwork of all kinds on instagram.com. if you haven't been there it's worth taking a look. You may find something that inspires you to try something different.
