Hey I'm not the only Sony user here? Everything is Canon or Nikon.
I purchased a Sony A33 when they first came out, I had a lot of Minolta lens and wanted to try the EVF. OVF on the A700 was nice and maybe a little than the A33.
Then I got a Sony A77 with the 16-50mm lens. The EVF on this has most OVF's beat all to H--l. It 's not the same EVF as on the A33 and A55 you can't believe how good it is till you try it. I know some people will never try it because it isn't an OVF.
Any way this thing is weather resistant, I live in Arizona so wanted something to stand up to the dust. When we went to Denver it was rainy and that doesn't bother the A77 in the least.
I still have the sony 70-300 G SSM, the 16-50mm SSM , Minolta 50mm 1.7 and a sigma 18-250mm I use. My advise would be to keep the A57 and invest the additional money you would spend on a more expensive camera on some really good glass.
The Sony A77 is big so if you want something small check it out before you buy it. It does work great with the 16-50mm and the 70-300mm G. just the right size for them.A33 was just to small for the lens I had.
Enjoy theA57 it is really nice and you are not gaining that much more with the A65

Google a65 vs a77 and you will get several comparisons to view. For me the large price difference (65 much lower cost) made the choice easy. I got the A65 with an 18 to 55 plus a 70 to 300 plus a carry case and a very high speed (30 mb/s, 8GB)card at BestBuy for $1200

Very good. I think the biggest difference in price is due to the fact that the a77 has a weatherproof magnesium body.

Probably why the pros buy the 77. Since I am not weatherproof the 65 is just fine. Next comes the 90 series later this summer VERY expensive

Does the A57 have GPS/geotagging?

Although I have the superb A580, I want a DSLT/DSLR with great movie capabilities. I'm set to sell my Sony HDR-FX1 video camera and purchase an A65 instead if I can. But I'd like geotagging, too, as I now have a 'need' to use it.

Does the A57 or A65 take the same batteries as the A230?

Have been using Sony cameras since 1997 and upgrading every 2 or 3 years. Now own and use the Alpha A-77 which is truly amazing. Noise is excellent for very large prints (24x30+) and at 1600 ISO very good. Camera has a hand-held twilight setting that is outstanding and takes multiple exposures and does an amazing job of handling highlights and shadows. Do consider the A-77 over the A-65, although both are great.
Love the electronic viewfinder and the 100% accurate view.

My go-to lens is the Sony (Tamron?) 18-250 Zoom. Very sharp and quite small when not extended. Have hand held for exposures of 1/25th with success on my better days (just made 80 years in May).

I am getting high on my new A65 not very different than the A57 but in any event I would recommend buying the David Busch guide from Amazon for what version you stick with. The oem manual merely mentions its features while the Busch guide explains them and their relationship to other settings. Enjoy

My new Sony DSC-HX30V is wearing a hole in my jeans. Appropriate, as that's where she lives. There are no organized photoshoots. She's living my life with me.

Don't know but the A65 takes a NP-FM500H 7.2v 1600mah. That is 7.2 volts (v) 1600 miliamphours (mah)

The A65 takes great video and if you set object tracking to on it will even keep things that are moving in focus. I took a video on our light rail that was moving at about 30mph and it was all in focus. This camera just keeps amazing me/

GPS is available on Alpha cameras from the A55 and models on up. It's an option so look for the letter "V" at the end of the model number. That designates built in GPS. Not sure on the battery question.
Now having GPS on my A55 let me warn you...it takes a minute for the camera to acquire satellite signals. So it is useless if you turn the camera on and off a lot. I usually turn mine on and leave it on when I'm going to be in an area for awhile and let it acquire the signal. It can be checked buy looking for the signal strength bars in the viewfinder. No signal strenght indicators means no signal...pretty simple.

Thanks James56. I thought I had read somewhere that the A57 doesn't have GPS, but I must be mistaken.

I wish Sony would stop producing so many very similar models in so short a time. It makes it so hard to make a decision...

You are right...I just checked Sony's website, and it appears they dropped GPS on the A57. Seems kind of odd, since the previous camera (A55) it replaced did have GPS. Probably done to knock a few bucks off price.

Yes, there is a flurry of activity going on in the camera world. Not only with Sony but Canon and Nikon as well. All are releasing new models every few months. Its hard to keep up with them all. But for us consumers...it's great. Competition is driving innovation and thats a big plus. I'm waiting on the A99 which is rumored for release late this year.

I bought a Sony just for the GPS feature and returned it after a few days. Although reviews said it was the best of the GPS cameras, I would sometimes wait 15 minutes to get a signal. Now I use an app on my cell phone instead - GeotagPhotos

I have had the A55 for over a year. Bought it when I was getting some error messages on extremely hot days on another body. To get the equiv frame rate on another body you would have to spend $5,000. The user controls take a bit of getting used to especially after using Canon Bodies for the past several years.
I purchased a 70-300 lens, and it may not be the sharpest lens in the lens tool shed, I purchased it at Best Buy, don't cringe, it was on sale and I had another $200 in Reward Zone points which brought the price down further.
They increased the video frame rate but unless I read wrong you still should be able to use AF during video capture
