If you are a photographer, you should not have to ask someone every time you take a picture what lens to use. You do not need a different lens every time you take a picture. You should have started with a 50mm lenses instead of all zoom lenses, and learned some thing about photography.

I think we have all become lazy and are looking for the do all combo of zooms... the 50 would be a great place to start; move those legs and change perspective. You will learn a lot about your lens and what you can do with it.

The OP joined UHH 9 days ago. Your response seems a little harsh, in my opinion.

You might want to check out adorama's Canon Portrait & Travel 2 Lens Kit - EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens & EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Lens. Great deal at $349! And very good lenses.

I think it's all you'll need, I might add a 40mm or 24mm f2.8, I'm assuming you are going to Dollywood and the twilight show was fantastic several years ago when we were there, had a one day pass and upgraded before we left so we could go back the next day. I'm sure I was at the wide end of the zoom for most of the trip at least in the town, in SMNP you can use the extra reach f the 55-250, I suggest Laural Falls and Cades Cove, check the schedule of Cades Cove, we got there early and waited beside a nice little stream. Cades Cove is best for wildlife in early am when it first opens, and in the evening. Expect it to be busy.

Thank you all for the helpful advice and tips. My wife is due for a possible hip replacement soon and I would not want to trade my quality time with her over trekking alone for a closer quality shot. However, I otherwise am not opposed to laboring a bit for a good shoot in any other circumstance. As I stated earlier in this post, "I am just getting in to photography" and am reading quite a bit on this site and taking it all in as I can. I will look into a 50mm also. Thank you all again and I look forward to learning photography by 'hands on' experience and the extensive knowledge that is represented on this website!

We are planning a family vacation to Pigeon Forge, TN. I have a Canon T3i and the 18-55mm that came with it. I plan to purchase the Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS STM before we go. My question is, will this be adequate to get some quality close-ups with family and take in the scenery with detail?

Jackeray: I also have the T3i with the 18-55mm kit lens. First additional lens I acquired was the 55-250, but I have not used it nearly as much as I anticipated. In advance of a trip to France and Ireland a couple of years ago I picked up the Canon 18-135mm STM and the 50mm f1.8. Both of these get a lot of use. The 18-135 is great for travel, especially when it is awkward or inconvenient to change lenses in the field. The kit lens has not been used since I got the 18-135. In advance of another trip to Europe this May I picked up a 12-28mm f4.0 Tokina that is just great. Took just two lenses on the trip. You can probably guess which ones.

I did not wish to be burdened with my tripod on the trip so I did without. Shortly after I returned I picked up a monopod that would have been great great to have.

Yes and no - Yes for family shots and landscapes during the day - no for low light shots unless you are bringing a tripod and using the delayed shutter option or a remote shutter. Overall - for most shots - yes.

Yeah - - I think those 2 lenses will cover 95% of anything you might want to shoot.
Eventually you'll want to get something wider and faster for indoors (like a 10-xxx or 12-xxx f/2.8) - - but for your trip, I think you've got it covered.

A professional golfer consults the caddy about his club choice, why shouldn't a photographer ask advice about a lens?

The two lenses you have will be just fine. Save some weight and spend the money on a nice dinner.

Something that could help you decide is to check out the metadata for shots similar to those you expect to be taking on your trip and choose your lenses accordingly. We're heading to Edinburgh for Christmas/New Years and I used that technique to choose the two lenses that I'll be packing - now I'm just hoping our wonderful TSA doesn't forbid cameras in the cabin!
