We are planning a family vacation to Pigeon Forge, TN. I have a Canon T3i and the 18-55mm that came with it. I plan to purchase the Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS STM before we go. My question is, will this be adequate to get some quality close-ups with family and take in the scenery with detail?

I think it's all you'll need, I might add a 40mm or 24mm f2.8, I'm assuming you are going to Dollywood and the twilight show was fantastic several years ago when we were there, had a one day pass and upgraded before we left so we could go back the next day. I'm sure I was at the wide end of the zoom for most of the trip at least in the town, in SMNP you can use the extra reach f the 55-250, I suggest Laural Falls and Cades Cove, check the schedule of Cades Cove, we got there early and waited beside a nice little stream. Bob.

For your needs, those two lenses and a speed light should be sufficient. If you haven't already done so, work on your fill flash skills before the trip, as this can make a big difference with your family close up shots.

Sure. It's a nice lens and not too big and heavy. Are you going to Dollywood? Nice place.

Thanks for the suggestion on the 24 mm. I may pick up an EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM. Looks like just the right trip to try it out. My wife as made it clear that we are going to Cade's Cove. No argument from me. We will check into Laural Falls. Anything with landscape and wildlife interests me.
Thanks again, Bob!

As I am just getting into photography, I have not had any experience with flash photography. I will read up on it in the forums. Any help here is welcomed! (Tips, equipment, purchasing, etc.)

I have always been anti-flash b/c of the shadows and unflattering flatness produced by it. Then, a few months ago I found out how to regulate the intensity of the flash on my 7200 and it has really made a difference where needed.

Is there a basic course online or a thread here that can give me a jump start on flash photography?

You could read 'Strobist" that's a help, My son and I like the effect of the Lumiquest bounce attachment, allows you to have a larger flash area, further away from the lens, and with the swings and tilts on the flash unit puts the flash off axis, I like it a bit to the left of the lens. makes a big soft light, helps to hide the shadows
