It is hard to gain a broader understanding of what is out there if the "in crowd" won't tell the rest of us what they're talking about.

If I see a term that's foreign to me, I just Google it.

I believe that if you politely ask, most here will politely explain.

I've heard that a "D" lens produces a sharper photograph than a "G" lens, is this true? I know "D" lenses are usually cheaper than "G" lenses so what is their appeal?

I have 3 D lenses that I use on my Df, they are also AF lenses not AF-S. Their appeal to me is that they are smaller and lighter than the AF-S G lenses and look good with my Df.

Nikon AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D
Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm f/2D
Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D

Quit whining.

Thank you for your civil reply. Did you see the response from earlier, Good Grief. I guess Ugly Hedge Hog protocol says you do not mention the name of the camera line you own! Like I said, I know almost nothing about photography and I just needed a little information from those of you who do. Thank you for your reply.

Just a little friendly banter that sometime gets mixed in!

I like AF-S lens because I can hold the focusing ring when the lens is in AF but I don't like G lens because it doesn't have aperture ring.

Is this another Nikon thing?? Their conversations always involve terms obscure to the rest of us.

What terms? Maybe we can help.

Google Nikon terminology. No sense in people retyping what's already out there. If you find a link to Nikon you will have a better chance of getting accurate information.

I have no clue about Canon terminology -- but I don't care since I shoot Nikon.

C’mon, Bill, comments like this give a bad name to us Nikon users who aren’t snobs.

I am a loyal Canon user (GL2 & XA 30) for video and a loyal Nikon user (S8100, P520, P900 & D5300) for photos. Whenever anyone talks about other manufacturers numbers & letters that I don't understand I MOVE ON. Should I be (seldom) interested for whatever the reason with the others, I will take the time to LOOK IT UP or ASK THE Q and NEVER CRITICIZE THE OP (Now that's an inside term, hope nobody tunes in from outside and yells at me).

I am not a loyal HOG simply for this reason. When I tune in and read the malcontents and sometimes rude postings, it upsets me. I am digitally & technology challenged and have found, that although upsetting from the negativity that oftentimes arises, I can even sometimes learn from these people but I find spending less & less time here.

Sorry I sounded off but this got to me. Love to all and Happy Research. V

as far as I know Sony's premium lenses are "G"'s,, canon's are "L"'s and Nikon's have a gold ring.
who makes "D" lenses?

I did read and reread multiple times before my first post; there was absolutely nothing to indicate that the subject was Nikon.

You are absolutely correct. I'm a Nikon user so I understood immediately what was being asked. It actally took me 3 readings of the OP to realize there was no mention of Nikon. Sorry for your frustration. I have to think you were not trying to be obnoxios with your responses, but rather that you were wanting to expand your understanding and knowledge.

Absolutely not, as a rule anyway. In some specific instances it may be true. The only significant difference is that "D" lenses have an aperture control ring, and "G" lenses are "gelded". meaning they do not have the aperture control ring. The G lenses are always the newer design.
D type lenses are almost all now discontinued and being older can be purchased used for less money than G lenses, hence the appeal. But buyers have to beware as MOST D lenses do not have an in lens auto focus motor (a few do), so those lenses will not auto focus on the entry level Nikon bodies such as the D40, D60, D3XXX and D5XXX models. Both types of lenses will AF with all other Nikon DSLR bodies.

I might interject one small point here. There is an entry level Nikon DSLR that has a lens motor built into the body. The Nikon D50 camera.
