I love my new Kindle Fire. I have all my camera manuals, magazines, and books at my fingertips. I only wish it was not dependant on WiFi to download new material. I keep my old Kindle in my camera bag with the manuals and how to books, it has whispernet so I can download anything at any time, just wish the old one was color.

Since I am a Magazine hoarder, I am thrilled to save the space in my studio. (anyone want 70 year old American Artist Magazines?)

Love the Ipad too, but its bulky and heavy.

I did pretty much what you said you want to do: I downloaded all my camera manuals to it, plus selected photos that I either want to keep with me (instead of in my wallet) or shows I want to put on for people. It's ability to show both photos and videos is great, plus the choice of portrait or landscape format.

But the biggest plus is the manuals. I just can't read the fine print of the printed ones. But on the Kindle I can enlarge the text. I'm always using it to figure out some obscure control or setting while on trips.

I have a Kindle Fire and a HP TouchPad tablet computer. As far as I am concerned the Fire is a real nice fast, color, reader that is a reasonably quick browser. It is good for looking up place to eat or get gas and checking email. The HP TouchPad is the best tablet that I think one can own. it is an open system that is not locked into proprietary systems like Kindle or Apple. Youi can do whatever you want to with it that you can do on a home computer or laptop. It is also substantially cheaper that any Apple IPad that you can find. I got a 32gb one for under $300 USD. It also has a Kindle application that you can use to read your books. You can load you own movies and pictures to the device as well. The down side is that it is wi-fi only. There are tons of apps availble for it and it works great and is easy to ramp up on.

I do nopt use it for large volume storage of photo images or for photo editting as it and other tablets were just not designned to perform those functions.

my .02 worth!!

From time to time, I have been a little jealous of my wife's Kindle. She has the plain jane one, as she has no need for color or video. She just reads books on it. What I like is that the only time it uses battery is when she changes pages. So battery life is superb.
the reason I haven't bought one is that most of the photographic magazines and books, have color illustrations, which I think are imperative for our use.
The bad thing is that I have to carry books around, and I'm now thinking I'd like to get a Kindle Fire so that I can just have my photographic magazines and reference material in one little device that I can have in my camera bag.

Who all uses a Kindle Fire, and do you happen to know of a good source with inexpensive deals?
From time to time, I have been a little jealous of... (show quote)

I just bought my hubby one a couple weeks ago at Best Buy, they have them on Amazon.com as well. They are $199 and the case cover was $44. He was a die hard kindle reader already and did not think he needed this, we had bought one for our daughter last month and she LOVED it, he has had it two weeks and LOVES it as well. The one downside is he reads a lot and the other is very light the fire is heavier to hold, but the up sides are a lot !! Internet access, movies, games.. the list goes on. Have fun i want one now too but I want Lightroom 4 more ;). I got a lesson in it yesterday it is awesome.

Why not go Ipad as you can get one of the stripped down models for not a lot more than a kindle fire... For a pure reader kindle is hard to beat, but it is my understanding that as a color tablet the Kindle fire is easy to beat.

You can find used ones on Craigslist, if you care to take your chances. I bought a Barnes & Noble Nook Color and bought an N2A SD card for it. It gives me a dual boot e-reader. When I boot to Android, I have the Kindle App and the Nook App, as well as a host of other features.

No need for a tablet. I have a netbook if I want computing functionality. It's just that sometimes I read and it's easier to hold a kindle in one hand in read, than it is to read a photographic book.

I may be the only one here who actually prefers a real book. But I do think it's a great idea for those who like them.

I'm a techno-nut, but you cannot beat the feeling of a library or book store with the smell or printed paper, the texture of to paper and quality craftsmanship of a well made book. Nice!

Agreed; but all that being said, when I go on a trip and want to carry it with me, nothing beats the light weight and small size for having a whole stack of books on hand in such a tiny gadget. Amazing

We bought a Kindle Fire at Walmart. At the time, they were offering a $50 gift card with the purchase. I used it the gift card later on the purchase a new laptop.

I have a Kindle DX that I got several years ago. I bought the Kindle Touch because of its touch screen, small size and long battery life. I have Kindle for PC on my desktop and laptop. I keep the DX at my bedside. The Touch goes into my man purse and I use the Desk/Lap top at other times. I can open any one of them and they sync to the latest page read. I bought the Fire as a gift for my niece, but did not see the need for me.
I can get all the other features of the Fire on my computers and smartphone. I can also now borrow books for my Kindle system from my local library. Yes I love Amazon Kindle.

Glad to hear. I was wondering if you could check out Kindle books from the library. What kind of selection is there?

That depends on your library system and resources. Sorry I can not give you a better answer.

Also I just got the information on how to do it (simple), but have two books to finish first before I shop my library.

When you use the library you are borrowing the book for two weeks. At my library if I need another two weeks I can renew.

You can get NOOK for Android if you have smart phone and read books on your phone, one less thing to carry if all you want are reference books, I find it a bit small for recreational reading though, Bob.

I have the Kindle Fire and learn something new every day. I have my web site on it but can't bring up the pictures. The color on other stuff seems ok to me. Does it just take a long time to bring up fotos? Help

Cheers,

Robin
