Spell Check

I usually check my email first thing in the morning... Now sometime I have my glasses and some mornings I have forgotten where I have taken them off... I usually leave a pair in about every room. I mean if I can afford a 5K camera why not! Sometimes I even have trouble seeing the coffee pot... Now that's not good at all since coffee is the elixir of life !! Sometimes if you talk to text you can send some real zingers.. ask my kids ! So I guess I can say I just enjoy the posts and the pictures and well have fun... life is just to short to be so damn finicky ... that's just my 2 cents.

The conversation seems to have drifted to spell check on computers but often that is not the problem. There are many people who confuse words and do not know which word to use. Some of the common misused words I see here every day are:

loose/lose
advice/advise
where/were
your/you're
there/their
add/ad
an/and

There are many more examples. Feel free to add your own.

I'm the worst speller around , but using a spell check , makes it worse, it changes what I write into a sentence or three or more words
I guess that's because I went to school in Norway in the late fortys, they taught no English in those days , I was surprised when I got here
As no one talked with that western drawl , it was like going to England, America never had its own language except for the first nation (indeans) . But that doesn't stop them from correcting ever one they can , an 99 percent of them only speak one toung.

Spellcheck is on in most applications I use on my PC, as it also is on UHH. Not sure if it can be turned off on UHH though as I never looked to see if it could be. Below is an article from Wikipedia on Typoglycemia illustrating how the mind can read misspelled paragraphs. This has been around the email circuit many times before too. I think some people are just in a hurry to post when they type and don't bother to check for misspelling, or just simply don't care. The cellphone is the worst though because it just doesn't spellcheck, it actually changes words that you typed correctly and it thinks you spelled wrong. On my Android phone, it does give you the option to check mark the word you spelled as correctly spelt. Otherwise, if you don't check the word as correct it changes it to what it thinks is the correct spelling, unlike spellcheck here which just underlines the misspelled word but doesn't change it.

According to a research team at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole. Such a condition is appropriately called Typoglycemia.

"Amazing, huh? Yeah and you always thought spelling was important."

The first example shown above is pretty easy to read correctly, but the second example from the Wikipedia website is quite a bit harder to read correctly, as the last two letters are not in the right location as the article says.

I am weary of trying to parse UHH posts with bad spelling, horrible grammar, entire paragraphs with no punctuation, posts with incorrect (possibly Spell Check enforced) words (e.g., cannon for Canon), and NO effort to edit and correct titles or text. One would think folks that can afford a $5k camera should be better educated than that, but apparently not. Whenever I encounter a poorly written post (one member's recent "Exposure" posts come to mind, but I don't want to single him out) I stop reading and move to the next post. As a college graduate, I have standards.😎

Well I would think that With Your STANDARDS, that you can at least speak two or three languages and read the same as, your type is always one here doing your useless duty of correcting every one who makes a mistake in spelling a language that was brought from another country , the Navahos, and Sue, apache laugh at you .

I can read this just as fast which goes to show you how unless these spell checkers really are , they just want to feel superiority over others
It's a dieses they have almost like a handy capped person , simular to assburge, just can't shut up

I guess I am missing your point. What surprised you when you got to America?
America is made up of people from every nation on the planet. Everyone had to learn English upon arrival if they wanted to become an American citizen, thrive and prosper. Most people did just that. Every Indian tribe had its own language and much of American English is taken from the Indian tongue. But American English is also from words in Spanish, Latin, Portuguese, Italian and other languages. I understand that and most likely you do as well. But there are specific word spellings in American English. The gist of this post is people do not use proper spelling of words. Often the wrong word changes the meaning of what is written.

Wholeheartedly agree.

Cannon - weapon to fire a projectile
Canon - Camera manufacturer

Dual - two, double
Duel - contest between two participants such as a gunfight, swordfight

Bare - naked, or to uncover
Bear- to bear means to carry something, or a wild animal as in a black bear, grizzly bear, polar bear

Peek - a glance or a quick look
Peak - the topmost point, such as a mountaintop, or "to reach a certain point"
Pique - to upset or excite somebody

Pedal - a lever controlled with the foot, such as a bicycle pedal, piano pedal
Peddle - selling items, such as a door-to-door salesman, or selling illicit drugs
Petal - a flowers brightly colored leaf

Those are just the tip of the iceberg of words that sound the same but are spelled a little bit differently. The OP was about people that write and do not spell correctly and leave it as is.

I think we're talking about two different things here. There's "spell check" and then there is "auto complete". Spell check underlines your word if it's spelled wrong and that's all. People run into problems when they have "auto complete". It guesses what word might be right in your sentence. It often gets it wrong.
Just my 2 cents.

I consider spell check a source of unintentional humor. In Word you can at least educate it by adding words it does not recognize.

My initial question has been answered- thanks for all the responses. I'm not a particularly good speller so I use spell check even with its quirks. Prior to that I used a dictionary - yeah I'm that old :)

Personally, I finhd 'spell check' to be a godsend to me because of my tremor, I always have to go back and take out extra letters as you see in 'find'.

Fasinating! What other little petty things do you like to gripe about?
