I agree on the uncorrected misspellings and not so good grammar, and I didn't even graduate from college. My spell checker puts a wavy red line under a misspelling, and since I am looking at the screen while I'm typing I see it right away. As far as grammar is concerned, I may not be perfect, but I do also proofread my posts and e-mails before hitting send. I am amazed, when hearing someone supposedly educated using double negatives, that they can be successful in their endeavors. I'm no prude, but to my generation these mistakes are glaring.
Sorry for my ranting. I make mistakes sometimes, but try to catch them before I send them on. It doesn't take that much extra time.

I am weary of trying to parse UHH posts with bad spelling, horrible grammar, entire paragraphs with no punctuation, posts with incorrect (possibly Spell Check enforced) words (e.g., cannon for Canon), and NO effort to edit and correct titles or text. One would think folks that can afford a $5k camera should be better educated than that, but apparently not. Whenever I encounter a poorly written post (one member's recent "Exposure" posts come to mind, but I don't want to single him out) I stop reading and move to the next post. As a college graduate, I have standards.😎

I guess I am missing your point. What surprised you when you got to America?
America is made up of people from every nation on the planet. Everyone had to learn English upon arrival if they wanted to become an American citizen, thrive and prosper. Most people did just that. Every Indian tribe had its own language and much of American English is taken from the Indian tongue. But American English is also from words in Spanish, Latin, Portuguese, Italian and other languages. I understand that and most likely you do as well. But there are specific word spellings in American English. The gist of this post is people do not use proper spelling of words. Often the wrong word changes the meaning of what is written.

The point was that there are many essentially unintelligible posts. If you don't care about spelling, I might suggest that the same attitude permeates all else that the naysayers do.
