My Windows machines all have it through Windows. It underlines suspected errors in red. I thought it was a new feature of UHH because that's where I first saw it, but members said it's a Windows thing. At least it doesn't guess what work I want to type and enter that for me - like on a cell phone.

You deserve a laugh -

Life gets complicated. Have to remember which language keyboard is being used. Lois would never have been a reporter had it not been for her super spellchecker.

I am weary of trying to parse UHH posts with bad spelling, horrible grammar, entire paragraphs with no punctuation, posts with incorrect (possibly Spell Check enforced) words (e.g., cannon for Canon), and NO effort to edit and correct titles or text. One would think folks that can afford a $5k camera should be better educated than that, but apparently not. Whenever I encounter a poorly written post (one member's recent "Exposure" posts come to mind, but I don't want to single him out) I stop reading and move to the next post. As a college graduate, I have standards.😎

One of my few complaints, going from PC to Apple, is that Apple's spellcheck is automatically running and editing words as you type them...largely without my knowledge. I rather liked Microsoft's method wherein the user would hit the spellcheck button when finished with a document and the program would highlight misspelled words and offer suggestions. Since Apple changes words as you type, I often don't realize I misspelled a word and even worse, that my iMac "corrected" it to a word I didn't want. Yes, I re-read my documents but often, the mind sees the word it thought it wrote and misses the actual word. Then again, there's the issue that younger generations were never really taught spelling, grammar and punctuation (nor to they memorize times tables, anymore) and aren't concerned about the finer points of good writing when they text and twitter.

Did you know you can turn off that function. I had to, for the reasons you point out. It was handy when you misspelt words and it 'guessed' the right one. Made me lazy. But enough was enough. Sometimes it just changed it back to what it was. Frustrating.

Thank you but I fear you are wasting your time. I, as well as others, have brought up common mistakes on the forum but some people take correction negatively and others just don't seem to care that people need to read their post twice to see what it is they are trying to say. We all can make typos and that doesn't bother me at all. I could list common errors but others have done that many times and it is a waste of time. People who use, where, instead of, were, or ,dosent, instead of ,doesn't, will not change.

All my word processors have spell and grammar check but I do not use grammar check as it isn't always the way I wan't my sentence constructed. Also spell check must be carefully inspected for meaning. e.g. I usually have dinner on the "deck" in the summer. If I hit s instead of d my spell check might correct it to "check"; a legitimate word but certainly doesn't make sense.

With respect, wan't isn't a word. No apostrophe necessary.
By the way, I grew up in Carmel and graduated in 1963. My mom taught at Mahopac.

Just a couple of comments.

I teach English as a Second language online along with public speaking and business lessons and I often find my foreign students are much better at spelling and grammar than many of my fellow native citizens. I often only need to help them with confidence, pronunciation, and accent reduction.

Fortunately, most of my American students for the law or business classes do have decent spelling and grammar skills but a few of them make me worry about their future employment or business prospects.

I have even received employment applications from high school graduates misspelling the name of the town they lived in, the color fo their hair, and many other horrifying mistakes.

Yes, my PC has spell check and checks some grammar too. But some people my use their phones or a tablet to post a reply. They have spell check too, but people don't pay close attention as the spell check in those cases only works as you are typing the word (usually). And punctuation? Many of the younger crowd don't use a cap to begin a sentence nor do they use periods. Why? I don't know. Perhaps it because they are lazy or maybe it's just because it's how they do it with their young friends.

This site has a spell checker that underlines misspelled words, but does not correct them automatically.

There's a lot of people on this forum that could use a spellchecker.

I usually check my email first thing in the morning... Now sometime I have my glasses and some mornings I have forgotten where I have taken them off... I usually leave a pair in about every room. I mean if I can afford a 5K camera why not! Sometimes I even have trouble seeing the coffee pot... Now that's not good at all since coffee is the elixir of life !! Sometimes if you talk to text you can send some real zingers.. ask my kids ! So I guess I can say I just enjoy the posts and the pictures and well have fun... life is just to short to be so damn finicky ... that's just my 2 cents.
