My husband and I have blond skin. We have a daughter with brown skin. People have been known to come to my husband's office and complain and call him a racist. Every now and then, he will turn around a picture on his desk and say, "have you met my family?" just for the reaction. Generally he doesn't refute the charge, just tries to deal with the issue at hand cause you don't want to be beat by experience (referencing Mark Twain).

BTW - I am not a professional and do not take pictures professionally but just to show a little comparison - a picture I took of my daughter and my last picture of a bird!

Thank you. I got lucky. It was a windy day. She, of course, hates it! If looks like dasloaf is really good at posing subjects. The girls look great. I love the way the earring just carresses the jawline.

I grew up in the South but am still amazed at how prominent racism is today. I do believe that it is a problem for all races. I make my students (adults) watch the movie Crash and then we really get into some heated discussions regarding discrimination. It can be a lot of fun. It definitely helps to have a sense of humor as a family that doesn't fit the sterotype.

Your reply should have been "So I can make enough money that I won't have to take a low end job as a security guard"

I was at a basketball game taking pics and security at the game asked me if I had a daughter playing and if not why was I taking pictures. I looked at him and smiled, one of the girls heard this and she came up and hugged me and yelled "Daddy"! Then another girl and another girl on the team came up and did this. It brought a tear to my eye. They went after the Security Guard for messing with their "Daddy"!

It's not posssible to please everyone, or even most people. Staying calm is always best. By the way, you didn't have to label those pictures. :D

Huh?

At a party I attended one black man dropped the "n" word. My jaw dropped open. He noticed it and retorted, "We can say it, but you can't."

I could never understand that reasoning. They are the ones keeping the word alive, yet they don't want anyone to use it.

Al Roker wrote a book, and mentioned that his daughter came home from kindergarten and used that word. Al immediately jumped to the conclusion that there were racists in her class. That's a big jump.

As bad as the bird is, I didn't know if it would be recognized without a label. LOL.

Wow, crazy.
Flowers vs sports. Some correlation. I coached youth baseball. In the tee-ball league you often have kids playing with flowers, chasing butterflies in the outfield, so . . ?
There was a thread here recently about "I take good pixs of white people, but how to you adjust for black people" (something like that) so . . ? (It was a reasonable photography question, not a racial one)
Wow, crazy.

Very strange week, someone wanted some photos of their son's team playing baseball and I went done to meet with them. I took my best baseball pictures with me and some other sport pictures and had a great presentation on my lap top with me. They asked to see my flower and landscape shots. They were told by someone that flower and landscape shots were how you could tell a great photographer from a mediocre one. I looked at them and thought to myself, wtf! When I told them I didn't have any, they said I wasn't a good enough photographer for them. WTF?

The other one was for a senior pictures. The mother saw some of my pics that I took for a friend of her daughters. She loved the pics. I meet her at her house and the first thing out of her mouth was, "you are white!" and i said ,"no I'm Ken, nice to meet you". She didn't even open the door. Her next words made me laugh so hard, I had tears in my eyes. "How can white person take pictures of a black girl." I answered with my camera. Her reply was to shut the door. I was laughing so hard, I couldn't help myself.
It was a wasted day but I went home laughing how someone thought how you can tell if someone is an expert photographer and that white people can't take pictures of people of another race. I think the pics prove them wrong

I think you proved that your skill level has nothing to do with your race. A few years back, (when I thought I knew what I was doing) I got hired to photograph a family reunion. This family was huge, and I spent a couple of hours photographing different groups of families. I was told they are spread out all over the country, and every couple of years they get together in a different part of the country for their reunion. NICEST bunch of people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. Great people are out there, but every once in a while you run into someone that just floors you with what comes out of their mouth.

WHAT A SUBJECT ! this has turned out to be today !
perhaps I can finish it, by just reminding us all we are all members of ONE race,

"THE HUMAN RACE"

why then can,t we all get along ?
