On the way back home it has to go in the checked baggage. That goes for all of Europe now!
Not true. I just returned from Europe yesterday and I hand carried all of my photo equipment in the cabin.
Jerry, it's a plot by the camera manufacturers. They are doing this to bolster sales of cheap point and shoot cameras that no one would want to steal.

The airlines are really screwing with us. Maybe it's the baggage handler's union that's requiring electronics to go into checked luggage.
On my last few flights, I carried a backpack - nothing checked. I don't fly any more, so that doesn't affect me.
If one of these days one of those terrorists is caught without underwear we will have to travel nude.
This is nothing to do with the airlines, unions etc. It's a proposal by US Homeland Security, so actually the US Government.
It is not in effect from Europe YET.
The airlines and more especially the pilots are against it as it is potentially more dangerous to concentrate lithium batteries in the hold than risk a bomb in the cabin.
Don't keep asking the question here. The only correct and up to date info will come from the airlines, Homeland Security and the TSA.
Another option is to take your best gear over and mail it home.

Will be flying from Seattle to Paris then to Rome. Reverse route on the trip home. What I'm I going to have to do to fly with a Nikon d500 and 18 to 300 lens. Can I take it as a carry on or do I have to put in checked baggage
Assuming you have not already made your flight booking and wish to put your mind at ease, consider altering your return flight from Paris, France to include Vancouver, British Columbia Canada, then on to Seattle, WA USA. As your return to USA will be from Canada, you will not encounter any issues with camera/lens, laptop, cell phone or any other electronics for that matter!!!
Just did a similar flight out of Cairo Egypt, which is one of the restricted countries in Africa. The only caveat in my suggestion to you, is that I did not fly using an American airline, I used KLM all the way to Vancouver, BC Canada and then transferred to Delta for the short hop to Seattle, WA.
Just a thought!
Have a great trip, enjoy both cities!

Yes, re-route your entire trip based upon conjecture, rumor and false assumptions. Whatever you do don't do the simple research and properly inform yourself. That would take all of the fun out of it. There is currently no prohibition of cameras or electronics in the cabin for US destinations originating from Europe on any airline, US or otherwise.
Just check the TSA website:
https://www.tsa.gov/ and/or your airline's web site. Currently, the TSA web site's factsheet only proscribes items coming into the U.S. from 120 specific , mid-east airports. (This has beern in effect since March 21.)

Joseph, it was a suggestion not a command!!!
I should have included more detail about my trip back from Egypt which was as luck would have it was on March 21, 2017. Beleive me when I say there was panic at Cairo airport that day. So, as I had to arrive back in Seattle, WA without fail on March 22nd, 2017, I used the route I outlined in my previous post. Does the OP "NEED" to use the circuitous route, NO, he does not, it was and still is a suggestion if the traveller is concerned and wants to put his mind at ease. So get off your high and might horse!
Garth
I think only your airline is the appropriate authority on what they will allow. They have their own interpretations of the TSA rules as I understand it. Call them, ask lots of questions and then decide what to do remembering that the interpretations can change as you are walking up to check in at the airport. Such is life in the 21st Century!

No high and mighty horse here Garth. Just sick of ignorance and false equivalencies. You made a stupid suggestion. That's all.

You say stupid, well it was not my suggestion on March 21st, 2017, it was KLM's suggestion on March 21, 2017 and it got me to where I wanted/had to be on March 22nd, 2017, namely, in the USA with all of my electronic equipment!
Are you so smart as to know what your government may/may not do when the OP is about to board his plane for the USA on his return trip?
I posted the suggestion as a way for the OP to relieve his stress on his homeward bound journey. I leave it to the OP to decide if the "suggestion" is worthy of consideration or not.
Garth
I just flew out of Amsterdam to the USA. Only difference from previous trips, was the camera had to be removed from my camera bag and put in the tray before it went through the screening device. After screening, it went back in bag and flew with me in the cabin as before.

Try to follow along here Garth. There is currently no prohibition on electronic devices in the cabin coming from Europe, where the OP stated he was traveling to and from. As far as I know he is not traveling to Cairo or Dubai or anywhere else that have secondary restrictions on laptops in the main cabin. It is very easy to get the latest, up to date facts to make cogent, informed decisions on what to bring and how to pack, secure and check any item on the TSA website. If you scroll back through the replies of this thread you will find so much much false information that seems to be just made up. Maybe the OP will take your suggestion and re-route his trip for his "piece of mind" and that is certainly his prerogative. I just believe we do a disservice by spreading erroneous information. I have seen the threads in this forum get hysterical for much less serious issue than this and some folks on here are extremely impressionable.
I can start a photography business in Southern Africa: clients hire camera bodies and lenses and they supply the cards. After their safari, return equipment and fly home with their cards without any problem!
