I would take the longest zoom you have, and look for a ultra wide angle lens, like Canon EF-S 10-22mm. You didn't mention which cruise you're going on, but keep in mind the boat will move during the night, and dock in the morning at a new port. Viking will take you to the local sites for photos, and tours. You probably be on a large bus, so carrying a lot of gear will become burdensome. On my last Viking cruise I took my 7D MII, Tamron 18-270mm VC, and my Canon EF-S 10-22mm. I carried the lens in a small backpack, along with a bottle of water. You'll have to get on and off the bus quickly, since the loading, unloading time is short before the bus must leave the area and move to a parking area. Have a good time, enjoy the food on the boat.

A couple years ago, the wife and I enjoyed the Amsterdam to Budapest Viking river trip. I had a Canon 6d with a 24-105 f4 lens and a Canon SX50 for situations where I needed a long lens. The combination served me well. If you want to stay with a single lens, the 18-135 should produce good results. However, if you want to stretch the zoom a bit, two alternatives come to mind: Tamron 16-300 or Sigma 18-300. Both are well regarded as decent walk around/vacation lenses and can be found for about $500. Enjoy the trip.

My wife and I went on a Viking river cruise. The 18-135 was on my 60D about 98% of the time. I'd also just bought the 10-18 Canon which was perfect when inside cathedrals and castles. It was the lens I used the rest of the time. My 55-250 (now long gone) never left the bag. The 18-135 was all the reach I needed. Yes, I cropped most images in pp. I'm sure you'll enjoy the trip. The other accessory you will need is a larger belt. The food on Viking was marvelous.

The 70-300 will be great when you go thru the valley of the castles. This is 4 hours long, Some of the castles are way up there. One of the best trips I've ever been on.

As a veteran of two Viking cruises, I would recommend a fast 50mm prime for shooting in churches and museums -most of which are dimly lit (use a cpl for shots of things in glass cases). I found that using my 70-200 zoom with a 1.4x teleconverter worked well for the castles you pass on the rivers. You can stitch frames of the 50mm for panorama if you need. This will keep your equip. weight down.

I would strongly suggest you look at a Sigma 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM lens. Offers wide angle similar to the 18mm and more reach of the 135 mm.

I agree. Tamron has a similar lens. I have the older 18-270. Great travel lens. It has served me well on many vacations. Will be taking it this summer on a Viking cruise.

I have the Canon 18 - 55mm and Canon 75 - 300 mm lenses. These came with the camera.

To be honest with you I'd probably go with the EF-s 18-200mm lens that Canon has. It's a little more broad than the 28-135mm lens.

Some advice to newbies:
Always upload jpg images
Check the box the says Store Originals so we can see the EXIF

We took a cruise from Lucern Switzerland to Antwertp on the Rhine and Mosel. I took Canon 24-105 and borrowed a 55-250mm. They worked very well. Rarely used the 55-250

I will be taking a river boat cruise in December. I have a Canon T2i rebel. I'm thinking of getting the Canon EFS 18 - 135 mm lense for closeups and wide angle. Would this be a good lense for that. Or can someone recommend another lense. My budget is limited.

I purchased the 18 - 135 from my 70d specifically for travel. I think it will suit your needs extremely well. The only other suggestion that I've seen so far is related to a faster lens for use inside building, cathedrals and low-light situations. However, I have to say that my nifty-fifty on a crop-sensor camera does not provide enough wide-angle view and would suggest that you consider the EF-s 24mm f2.8. It's a full stop brighter on the wide angle end and will give you more to work with indoors. $129 on Amazon and small enough to fit easily in a pocket. Enjoy the cruise.

Based on my experience on cruises, I think, once there, you will wish you had a reach of 300mm from time to time. Maybe rent a lens for the trip??
