I will be taking a river boat cruise in December. I have a Canon T2i rebel. I'm thinking of getting the Canon EFS 18 - 135 mm lense for closeups and wide angle. Would this be a good lense for that. Or can someone recommend another lense. My budget is limited.

That's the lens that I started with. What other lenses do you have?

I would strongly suggest you look at a Sigma 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM lens. Offers wide angle similar to the 18mm and more reach of the 135 mm.

I have the Canon 18 - 55mm and Canon 75 - 300 mm lenses. These came with the camera.

I would strongly suggest that anything with more than a 5X zoom ratio will have too many sacrifices to image quality.

I'm a novice, how will I know if it has more than a 5% zoom ratio?

It all depends on what you want, do you want to enjoy yourself or be burdened by equipment. If you want to enjoy yourself, do what I do, take a 24-750 mm pocket Sony DSC-HX50V and/or a Sony RX100 series. I have belt pouches for both cameras, they are always within reach, and both my hands are free to hold my wife when ever I want. Look, simplify what ever you take, don't take too much, enjoy your trip with the minimum amount of equipment. Yes, I own a ton of DSLR equipment, but I leave it all at home when I go on trips. I only take the above mentioned camera's cause with them I can do almost anything my DSLR's can. So, travel lite, travel right and learn to ENJOY your travels.

I now have a Pentax 18-135mm lens that is fantastic. I wish I had it when we took our Russian river cruise several years ago. You might want to also include a 35mm or 50mm, f 1.8 lens for low light shooting. My Pentax 50mm f 1.8 goes for less than $200. We had a great time on our cruise, hope you do as well.

The 18-135 lens was, maybe still is, the lens that came with my Canon EOS 60D, and I have had no complaints with it other than its 'reach' is limited. I think you will find that 135mm is not nearly enough range to get good shots from the boat to things on shore without serious cropping and possibly enlarging. I ended up buying a Tamron EF 70-300mm DI VC. Sigma makes a similar lens, and they were about the same price. The reports on UHH seem to rate them both about equally. Alternatively, you could probably rent one and save a few dollars.

I have traveled on a Viking River Tour. Your 18-135 will be fine for most things. You will not need anything longer than the 135, However, I would look for a wider lens for pictures in the city and town. There are very narrow streets, and many interesting buildings, doors etc. 18 MM on a crop sensor such as your Rebel is not wide enough for many good shots.

Yes, it will be good.

I was happy with my 17-50 on a Viking cruise last year. I have many other choices but that was all that was needed. You don't want to fuss with carrying or changing lenses while on the group tours. Enjoy!

You can sometimes take multiple overlapping shots and stitch to panoramas later. Not so much where there are people.

You should do well even if that is the only lens you use. For many photographers with a crop body 18mm is all the wide angle lens they will ever need but there are many other alternatives that are good choices.
Lenses do their part when we do ours.

The 18-135 on my T2i then 70D, both cropped sensor, has been just fine for narrow streets, etc., overseas. My experience, of course.
