Some are made in Germany, some in Japan by Cosina, but it does not really matter where they are made. They are designed by Carl Zeiss, AG and they need to meed the QC targets established by Zeiss.

The Zeiss ZM lenses are very close in quality to the Leica M counterparts for a fraction of the price. They are a natural choice for the A7 series because they are well suited. I have used both brands in my A7. The A7 and the 35 mm Zeiss Biogon are a very nice combination for walking around.

But I still have reasons to hang on the my Nikon gear. I just don't use Nikon lenses on the A7 because they are mostly autofocus and don't cooperate like Canon AF lenses would with an AF adapter - yet.

I do hope your C is in long term remission, if not fully C free. Good luck.

Due to advanced cancer I was compelled to abandon my large format cameras and move to digital. On the recommendation of my printing mentor I purchased a Sony a7RII. I have always been partial toward German optics so the availability of Carl Zeiss lenses made it an easy sell. The combination of the Sony 41mp sensor and the resolution of the Zeiss lenses in some ways mimics the kinds of imagery captured with my Linhof and Rodenstocks kit. Additionally, the use of Zerene Focus Stacking software allows me to use my lenses at their optimum apertures which produces images not attainable with a single exposure on sheet film. I have several recent posts requesting plant identification and you can see the results that I am getting. Excellent equipment and meticulous technique shows in the print.
Best to you, Fred

What made the Zeiss lenses was the ordering of the pattern of spherical radii of curvature and the chemistry of each glass element (index of refraction). Those two and exacting manufacture. The whole thing came out of Carl's head and of course anyone could copy cat. Just buy a Zeiss take apart and reverse engineer.

I doubt that the Zeiss optics are made in Germany. I remember a few years ago when Kyrocera made Contax brand cameras with Zeiss glass, the article stated that the Zeiss engineers optimized the qualities of Japanese glass. Also Zeiss has a presence in Japan and probably oversees QT. I saw a photo once inside the Cosina factory that showed a Carl Zeiss MTF machine. Like most manufactured goods today there is definitely an international mix there. But I think that's OK. Production methods are so much more advanced than say 50 or 60 years ago.

YES! I use Sony A77 and RX100 lll. Love them both. I've also had both Canon and Nikon gear in the past and sold them.

My farrier was given that camera and he absolutely love it. I have been very impressed with the quality of shots he is getting and after being a Nikon person forever I'm seriously thinking of getting one.

I use a Sony Alpha 7S. I started with the 7R but did not like their shutter system, which Sony was very helpful in he move. I bought it because the NEX 7 made all my full frame legacy lens to have 1.5 times their focal length.
the Sony sensor system has given me an ASA range of 100 to 402,600. I seldom go above 30,000, so I am a happy camper.
good luck with your move to sony

Sony has completely abandoned making DSLR cameras. They either produce DSLTs, translucent mirror and Mirrorless. The a7r2 mirrorless, 42 megapixels is the leader now. The new a99ii is the leader for translucent mirror, full frame. One A-mount, the other E-mount. The a77ii is the best crop sensor DSLT Sony has now. This is why Sony is so far ahead in mirrorless technology. The a9 is coming soon too.

Don't know if you are into YouTube. If you are check out Jason Lanier and Gary Fong. They primarily shoot with the A7RII.

I been reading photography digest here every since I became a member and it seems to me that all the discussions are about Nikon are Canon, are pictures posted using Nikon are Canon cameras, I been a photographer for 13 years now and I usually do weddings and HeadShots and I switched from Canon 5D Mark II selling all my Canon gear and went to Sony a7ii and Sony a7rii and I love both cameras and they are not as nearly as heavy as the Canon gear was and the images are beautiful. I read once where someone had an issue importing the raw files into LR CC? I have LR 5 and LR CC and I've never had a issue importing the raw files to eather program.
Back to my question, does anyone use Sony? Perhaps it's just (Sony a7) such a awesome camera no one has issues with it.? I'll post some pictures next time. Thanks

The same could be said of Fuji, Olympus, Pentax (which I shoot ) and Lumix ( my wife )-all good.

I'm a Nikon shooter and a little over a year ago got into Sony mirror less. First I bought a A6000 and then an A7II. Purchased a few lenses and enjoyed shooting them. I was always comparing to my Nikon equipment and most of the time the I liked the Sony images somewhat more than what I was getting out of Nikon. Not a huge difference, but I felt sharpness and color where just a tad better. I shot both Nikon and Sony for about a year. More recently I sold off all the Sony equipment and moved back to complete Nikon with a D500 body. The main reason for the switch back was capability of the camera system. Sony does not have any long lenses, and still an underwhelming choice of native 'E' mount lenses. I tried adapters, but most were poor at best. I began to lust after 'birds in flight' and Sony had nothing over 200mm in a native lens. So I resolved to shoot Sony except when Birding and then grab the Nikon, but I fond that problematic because switching between 2 different camera systems was just too confusing. Many missed shots because of differences. When I took stock of everything I finally decided that the Nikon equipment could do everything the Sony could and with more Lenses and longer lenses available. True, Nikon had no IBIS, no Focus peaking, no EVF and some other features that I liked, but I decided those were not really improving my shooting enough to warrant keeping the Sony system. It was a hard choice, but a lesson learned. I know some people shoot multiple systems, but I found that's not for me. Now that the new A9 is announced it sounds exciting, but wanting to shoot birds, Sony still has no glass to support it. Meanwhile I'm happy with the Nikon system and especially the D500.

Canon FD lenses (and almost every other lens in existence) works with adapters on an FE-mount camera. I have three FD lenses that are quite good.

I went from Minolta to Canon and now to Sony a6000 and a6500. Can still use my old Minolta lenses and my not so old Canon lenses.
