A part of the below reply prompts me to ask whether the camera manufacturers list aurhorized sellers? And give city, state of locations. This would go a long way toward judging whether a non-major NYC store is wortn dealing with.

47th st. Photo closed serval years ago. At that time, they had a good reputation. The name was either purchased or taken over a few years later and it is now a grey market mecca of upselling and misleading the customers. They are NOT a Nikon authorized dealer and I doubt very much that they are authorized by Canon or many (if any) of the others. I would be very wary of doing business with them.

if I remember right I used to get a big catalog from them back in the day.
I have not heard much about them in years.

Yes the camera manufacturers do have authorized dealer lists. Here's the one from Canon, I had posted on this thread.
http://downloads.canon.com/dealer/canon-ad-4-20-17.pdf. One can find others using Google or camera maker websites. The lists are readily available.

I purchased a Nikon camera from them in 2007 as I was lured by the price. Turns out it was gray market, even though I asked before purchasing. It gave me problems from the get go. Their service was terrible and when I finally resorted to sending my D500 to Nikon
they refused to work on it. Just say NO to 42nd St.

huh?

"The Nikon D500 is a 20.9-megapixel professional digital single-lens reflex camera using an APS-C sensor. It was announced by Nikon Corporation on 6 January 2016 along with the Nikon D5 FX format camera. It replaced the D300S as Nikon's DX format flagship DSLR." was it a prerelease copy?

I bought six Nikkor lenses from them back in 1981 or so. No problems then, but as Jerry said, new ownership likely has changed that.

Adorama, B&H, Cameta Camera, and KEH are well known to be fast, fair, and honest.

Also, for used equipment, there's also Roberts Photo:

Used: usedphotopro.com
New: robertscamera.com

I deal with them in addition to A, B, C and KEH, never got "burned" by any of them either.

I see posts asking about 42nd st. and their reputation. I recently noticed an online offering from 47th St. In my film days I bought a lot of equipment from 47th St. and was treated fairly. Do any of you have recent experience with 47th St.? Thank you.

While I can't speak of the current firm with regard to their practices and reliability, be aware that they have purchased the name and logo of 47st Photo and are not the same company. They do not appear to be an authorized dealer and are apparently selling grey market products without a USA warranty.

I live about an hour from Roberts (they are in Indianapolis - 2 locations) and it is a family run business that has been in Indy for 60 years.

I've bought an awful lot of gear from them and they have always been helpful, knowledgeable, and honest. The owner (son of the original owner) is one of the nicest people you'll meet. I support them as much as I can because they provide what online businesses cannot; I can go in and handle all different cameras, lenses, etc.

Every time I get a new lens I take my camera with me and they let me put the lens on my camera and I go out the front door and taken pictures outside and around the area of the store. I get a chance to see the image quality, focus speed and accuracy, and if the results are what I expected. Great place to go.

I took a chance on a superwideangle lens for my Sony NX-5 from 47th Street. I had used them a couple or three decades ago for some Exacta accessories with good experiences. This experience was just as good: good price, exact product described, prompt shipping. That's just one man's recent experience. But 42nd Street! No, I have real so many tales of woe on UHH that I wouldn't consider wasting the electrons to cruise their website!
