You need something dense and heavy to dampen vibration. Commercial bags have steel shot in them.

Something that will not be recognized as food by some critter, such as a mouse. Or chew proof bag material.

A carton of BBs will do that, but slapping your lens down on a BB bag isn't wise...

I carry two bags of trail mix. Real easy to use and the bag is sealed.

I'm looking into this myself. I've read that buckwheat hulls are very lightweight, so if you are packing it, that might be the way to go.

Where would I find buckwheat hulls?

Anything that won't absorb moisture. Closed cell Styrofoam balls would be a good choice.

Some like bird seeds, rice, beans, an some filler from Micheal's Crafts.
What do you recommend or suggest?

I use the small Styrofoam pellets like those found in bean bag chairs. Very light but sturdy and conforming when anything is placed on it.

What has weight got to do with something on which someone is resting a lens? Styrofoam pellets, or balls, will provide a stable platform of inert material and be easy to carry. In addition, it has rather good vibration dampening characteristics as well.
