If I intend to be away for more than a week, I take four 32gb, and eight 16 gb, and four 8 gb cards. That gives me plenty of storage -- 288 gb and enough different cards that all my eggs are not in one basket. Then I don't have to lug my laptop.

I take a laptop with me and download pictures and associated GPS data every evening. If I did not have the laptop I'd use the capability of my camera to make copies of every image on both SD cards installed--that way there would be a backup SD card if one failed.

When I get home, the contents of the laptop are copied to my desktop and those are then post-processed with Lightroom® and selected ones are uploaded to Flickr®. At that point, I have the original photos (JPEG) on the SD chip, the originals with GPS integrated on the laptop and desktop, and the enhanced photos (off LR) out on Flickr. It works for me. YMMV

I, too, copy the images to my laptop every evening. Also to an external disk drive (2TB WD Elements). I leave the images on the SD or CF cards (separate cameras) and keep replacing the cards in the camera(s). When I return home I import the images to Lightroom from the laptop, rename them, and then copy to two separate external hard drives with "Compare Advance" (http://www.bauerapps.com/compare-folders-windows-compare-advance/) -- there are several similar programs, of course. Only at that time do I feel comfortable formatting the cards in the camera.

Anyway, I always have, at least, three copies of each image except during that period between the shot and the laptop transfer. FWIW, all my images are RAW. BTW, I have almost 100,000 images in my current LR catalog.

I'm was going thru the same issues a few weeks ago & decided to purchase a WD My Passport Wireless Pro for a 6 week trip to Spain next month. Glad I gave myself plenty of time to test it out. Frankly after a few test runs it was clear it wasn't going to do the trick...very, very slow transfer rates & worst of all, doesn't handle RAW files. In the end I decided to purchase additional SD cards & a storage case. To be doubly sure, I'm also taking my laptop with a standard WD Elements drive so I can both back up as well as share images via email, Instagram etc with friends & family. Don't even think of wasting money on the WD My Passport Wireless Pro drive...if you lived closer, I'd give you mine!

This thing does it all. You control it with your phone, using wifi, through a free app. It has a card slot and a usb connection for a hard drive. Or, with a usb adapter for another card, you can back up to it.

Just researched it on your recommendation and bought it on Amazon for under $40 - arrived today. Works like a dream. I have numerous small 1TB external HDDs that I have accumulated over the years for backups, so this is the perfect solution. The external power pack and WAP/router features are icing on the cake.

Thanks for this!

the wireless hard drive? To many things can go wrong!!! Take plenty of cards and cases, and KEEP on your person. You can always buy more if you do not take enough.....I like the idea of smaller. You can store 104 raw 22 mp files on a 8GB card, or 1040 jpeg of the same size. Double that for a 16 GB card.
