I'm puzzled, Is it a stand-alone? If so,how do you know the drive is transferring/has transferred all of the images from the card to the drive? Looking at the manual, it appears that it has to be connected to a phone? or computer, and the transfer process removes the data from the card?

I have six 8Gig and two 16Gig cards, and change the card every day or two when traveling. If I'm driving, I take the laptop and save daily.
Once set up at home with a computer, you can feed it SD cards while you travel. Only if you want to then view the images you've copied, do you need a phone, tablet or computer.

Jerry,

The drive I posted the link to has a built in SD card reader. The reviews say it does a good job of copying your files for backup. The reviews go on to say that the various connections to phone, tablet or cloud get a little clunky. If you use it as an on the road backup system then go home and plug it into your computer, it works fine.

The thing only makes sense for people that (A) want on the road SD card backups and (B) don't want to take a computer with them.

Stop into Walgreens or Walmart and dump to DVDs? Send the DVDs to your home address. Buy other SD cards and see if you can transfer the pics at Walmart, Walgreens, or maybe a local library. Get a Snapfish account and upload from the motel / library.
The best part of 70 is that you've had a lot of years to make the same mistakes twice!

I travel a lot. I use 16GB SD cards. I travel with 22 of them. I use two Think Tank SD Pixel Pocket Rocket's, each holds 9 SD Memory Cards.

I use 16GB to avoid having all my eggs in one basket.

I start my photo adventures with 18 empty SD cards in the Think Tank and 4 in two Nikon's. They re not reformatted until everything is downloaded and backed up.

We use a lap top for reviewing the dailes to check the cards and cameras also. We also use backup drives via lap to back up files. Now the flying problem is getting to be such a PIA the WD drive might be good, but you still can't see dailes.

Thanks to everyone. Lot of great information from one simple question. Still not sure, but it seems the trend is just to stock up with a bunch of extra SD cards. Thanks too all. Dave.

I understand what it is you are after. However, just some food for thought. Years ago my photographic lecturer
told the assembled class, never put a large megabite card in your camera. His maximum suggestion at that time
was no more than 8 GB (different I know if you are shooting video).

His theory was if you lose an 16,20,30 GB card you have lost quite a considerable amount of photographs, whereas
an 8GB card, not as many photographs.

I have kept to his theory, although I have increased to 16GB and no greater (I do not do video).

The suggestion made by 'bsprague' would appear to fulfil your needs, but personally I would be very nervous of going
on your "my bucket list" trip and having a 1TB hard drive stolen or lost with all your photographs on it.

SD cards are relatively cheap nowadays. My advice would be to take a 1TB equivalent, if that is the capacity you think
you will need, in SD cards and don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Hope you enjoy your trip and post lots of good photographs on your return.
I understand what it is you are after. However, j... (show quote)

Well.....

I've had lots of things get delayed and lost in the mail. If you carry them with you, and you don't make it home, no big deal - sort of. But, suppose you get home, and the SD cards never arrive. You'll have to take that fun trip all over again.

It seems to me a soon to be 87 year old that everyone on here wears a belt and suspenders. Come on you young 70 year olds get with it. Always have a backup. Years ago we always had our negs.

At 73, I often go without a belt, something I occasionally regret when I am out shopping.

So forgetful!
