I'm wanting to purchase a telephoto lens for my Nikon D810. I have rented the Nikon 200-500, Tamron 150-600, and Signa 150-600. I shoot Eagles Mainly. Any recommendations?

These comparisons should help.

I use the sigma 150-600C on my d7200 and am happy as a clam. It all depends on your budget.

I have been shooting wildlife/birds for the last 6 years ( since retirement). My choice for Eagles or other birds - especially in flight would be a Canon system - like a 5Dsr and the 400 f4 DO II (or even the 400 5.6)- hand holdable and CROP if needed and use pixel enlargement if needed.

My Nikon 200-500 is for ever attached to my D500. Group auto focus, 98 percent keep rate on focusing. Is there another choice, i think not.

I have a D750, and here in the Windy City I'm shooting mostly urban stuff, but on a few occasions me and a few friends travel to the suburbs and Forest Preserve area looking for wildlife
and I have rented the Nikon 70-300mm (one with VR and one without VR) and Nikon 80-200mm. There is also a 200-400mm zoom as well, if you have a tripod. Of these lenses, I liked the 70-300mm AFS VR
lens the best, because it could be hand-held. I stress that I RENTED them (for a weekend) because they are all hard on the wallet if you're buying them, although U might luck up on a nice refurbished lens.
It sounds like you already have a nice collection of lenses, but they're all zooms. Consider a refurbished PRIME lens like the AF Micro 200mm zoom F/4, but get ready to open up the piggy bank!
Tamron has some nice alternative lenses at half the price though.. GOOD LUCK! ---Greenmachine

Buy Nikkor glass and you won't be disappointed.

I had the older tamron, and after some use it started to creep on me and it seemed to focus hunt a lot. I sold it and got the Nikon 200-500 and I do not regret the decision. When the 500 reach is not adequate, the lens may be used with Nikon's 1.4 or 1.7 teleconverters, although I would suggest a tripod when using the teleconverters.

I have none of these but was looking at the Nikon 200-500 last week. That one would be my choice if I were you. There are 3 reasons for that.

1. It is highly recommended by users and reviewers.
2. It will work better with Nikon cameras then the other manufacturers lenses. (focus speed mainly)
3. It works very well with Nikon teleconverters making it possible to extend the range without sacrificing image quality noticeably.

I have a Sigma 150-500mm on my Nikon D300 which I used with great satisfaction on Safari in South Africa. However, from reading the comments in The Hog over the past few months, reading the lens tests and also the subjective articles, I am convinced to buy the Nikon 200-500mm for my Nikon D800e.

Your AF will be crippled by the f6.3 and 5.6 apertures ......

I've been reading about what lens would best fit your needs..... Telephoto, Macro or Wide Angle .. I myself have found the perfect lens that fits all my needs, and that is the TAMRON 16mm to 270 mm with a 3.5 Aperture.... It does well in any condition..The IOS goes as high as 28000.. It's just great over-all lens

I have the Sigma 150-600 Sport. Great lens but not for hand holding.

It can be handheld just fine. Just used mine today for a baseball doubleheader. You just have to have good technique and make sure that your shutter speed is fast enough.
