yup, I did. Here's 2 pix of Buda. Enjoy and thanks for looking.

Don't think so. The Parliament building is on the Pest side of the Danube. The Fisherman's Bastion is in Buda (the hilly side).

We did the same tour in the reverse direction. I think a tripod would be more trouble than it's worth, especially on the shore excursions. I didn't bother with a monopod either. Practice your hand held technique, use shake reduction, and watch your shutter speed. All should be good.

I've had precisely the same experience on this and several other trips. Tripods are oversold now, with the advent of stabilization techniques and high IQ shots with 400-800 ISO shots that permit higher shutter speeds..
I have even had considerable success in handheld shots for merged panoramas with careful alignment of horizons when shooting. This one takes practice, but it works.

You could use the tripod when you are off the boat.

We'll be taking a Danube River Cruise this May from Budapest to Nuremberg and on to Prague. I've heard that because of vibration on the boats, it isn't really worth taking a tripod. Thoughts??

No tripod. Shoot faster than 1/125 sec. and enjoy your trip.

Not sure, but would love to hear about your trip wen you get back. Anyway what about when you are docked at night and your land excursions, I would bring mine.

Did the Danube a few years back. I use a monopod and place the foot on top of my shoe to lessen the vibration. Seems to work.
Enjoy your holiday.

Vibration - and movement. You and your legs will provide good support and stabilization.

I use corn hole bags a lot... easy to carry and clean.

BUT, when traveling a long way, I don't want any extra weight. I bring large zip lock bags from home and buy actual beans (white, red, black eyed, whatever) at a local store. Cheap and works just fine...

No need, for two reasons:
1. The boat will do most of its traveling while you're asleep. Most of your photos you'll take during land excursions.
2. With IS I got great shots handheld on the one day there was a daytime cruise.

I took that trip 2 years ago. Just take your camera. You will not realize you are even on a moving boat. I hope there is enough water in the river, it was low when we were there and had to travel by bus for about 3 1/2 hours around the shallow area. Enjoy.

I plan to take along a tripod on a cruise to Bermuda soon. I have no plans to use it when the ship is moving, but I hope to use it for capturing night lights when the ship is docked. I would think the trip you describe would present many more great opportunities for this kind of shot.

For me, this will be an experiment. Even when docked the ship's engines will likely be running so there will be some vibration that could make trouble for a long exposure. My plan is to put some carpet between the tripod and the ship's deck; that may or may not work but at least I'll know whether this approach is worth the trouble.

You're right. I got confuse on the two sides of the Danube River. Thanks for the correction.

That is correct, the vibrations shake a camera something terrible, better is a monopod (if using a stabilization at all) and put the pod on the top of your foot for example, that will dampen the vibration somewhat. I would go for handheld!

I have taken one Viking cruise and hand held worked fine. This summer we are taking a Viking cruise, Budapest to Amsterdam. Plan to do hand held again. Another issue which often arises is what lens to take. The only lens I ever take is my Tamron 18-270. Works great. A faster lens for some evening and interior shots would be helpful, but I find it much to inconvenient when traveling, especially in a group. Just my opinion.
