We'll be taking a Danube River Cruise this May from Budapest to Nuremberg and on to Prague. I've heard that because of vibration on the boats, it isn't really worth taking a tripod. Thoughts??

At most I would use a monopod. A tripod is pretty useless on a moving boat, in my opinion.

Makes you glad you're not shooting 32 or 50 ISO Slide Film anymore. Up the ISO and Shutter speed, 'cause bracing against a bulkhead (wall to landlubbers) or railing will make YOU vibrate even more than you are through the deck. Loosen you knees and relax some. Go handheld and leave the tri-legs at home. Hope your longer lens has IS or VR or VC or OS or better yet, your body does.

Have a fabulous time--the Beer's great and there are several schnitzel varieties to try.

I can't think of any boat I've been on that with the engines running you could use a tripod, the vibration just runs up the legs, I did try back in the 60's on the Staten Island Ferry, better off hand holding, perhaps a mono pod resting on your foot, haven't tried that yet, Bob.

We did the same tour in the reverse direction. I think a tripod would be more trouble than it's worth, especially on the shore excursions. I didn't bother with a monopod either. Practice your hand held technique, use shake reduction, and watch your shutter speed. All should be good.

Only for possible night shots when you are ashore, although there may be other alternatives (like fast lenses, image stabilisation and high ISO values).

Even when the engines aren't running the water is always moving. On shore a bean bag or just a few folded clothes can provide a stable platform.

A simple little travel or back packing trick I learned many years ago was to adapt a dog leash with a 1/4 20 thread eye bolt to attach to the camera or lens tripod mount and stand on one end of the leash and pull up to help steady the camera. Much lighter and compact than any tri or monopod.

Tripod is not very useful on a boat, but usually the cruise boats stop and you can get off. I used a tripod for early morning and late evening shots, especially to shoot panoramas, in Prague, Vienna and Budapest last year.

You can also get more stability, while avoiding vibrations, if you use a belt support. I usually use this with a monopod; with a tripod you should strap the legs together and use one extended leg for the belt support.

I suggest a bean bag. You can get the beans locally so you don't have to pack them.

I have taken the same Viking River Cruise and a Tripod won't help and it will just slow you down. You have not mention the camera and lens you have, but I suggest you bring along at least 2 lenses. 1 lens to shoot at night. When you reach Vienna, your boat will dock at night and you will have time to go the city and take some night photography. In Budapest where you will start, go out and shoot nearby where your boat is dock as you will have no time after that except during the planned tour during the day. At Prague, there will be enough time to shoot as you will be staying there for 3 days. Enjoy your trip!!!! Check these photos that was shot during my trip.

Yes vibration is 24/24, but yes I've seen folks with tripods and I brought mine along and used it too butwhen we were tied up.

Try contacting the Cruise Lines. Ask them your questions. The type of hull design may make a difference. River boat hulls are of different designs than open water hulls. Vibration may be different also. Your trip sounds great, hope you get to see everything you want. The Danube is a main artery in the World's Greatest Food Court so your diet will be wonderful as well. Have fun and shoot everything.
