I am headed to Europe this summer. I can only bring one lens and one body. I will bring my 28-300 lens to cover as broad a range as I can but I am struggling as to whether to bring my D610 (FX) or D500 (DX). That is, will I be happier preserving the wider angle (28mm) and use the full frame or, enhancing the telephoto end by using the crop factor body? I don't think any of the bells and whistles offered by the new D500 impact the decision for tourist photography. What would you choose?

Europe needs a wide angle lens. Not having wider then 28mm is a sin. For me I would want full frame and 16-24mm.

Not sure why your limiting yourself with one lens but I would guess wide angle would be much more useful than long besides I'm sure you'll find yourself inside some very old stunning buildings so your gonna need a wide fast lens
I'd be taking
D500 11-16 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 that's if I was taking Nikon

I've recently purchased Olympus 4/3 omd I'd take 7-14,12-40,40-150 all 2.8 pro
This kit weighs in at less than 1/2 that of above and its amazingly sharp

Since the D500 is newer, I would bring that. Yes, wide angle will be useful, but no matter which one you decide to bring, at some point, you'll wish you had the other. In the end, it really won't matter. Enjoy your trip, and take some nice pictures.

I really like to travel with my D500 coupled with the Nikon 24-120. I travel quite a lot to Europe, Mexico and the USA. I use to take everything I have. I still take quite a lot but I never go without taking a travel tripod. Night shots are fun.

My favorite lens was an 18-35mm on a Nikon D750. Like others have said I found the wide angle end to be more useful.

I'd say take the 610 as I say full frame over half frame every time. Going to Europe I'd worry more about backup and try to carry a second body and second lens. Have a vreat trip!

Last year we went to Switzerland (wide vistas and you would think the occasional need for telephoto) and Italy ( Venice, Verona, Florence and Rome: read a lot of limited views and need for wide angle.) Took the DX 17-55 and 55-300 and after I returned realized I did over 90% of my shooting with the 17-55. Take the D610 and your lens and have a great time. But hey, that's just me.

If you are looking for a great body to take, how about Melania Trump's. If she's willing to go you'd forget doing any photographjy.

FX all the way. I was in Germany twice for two weeks in the '80s. Took an FX with me both times, along with two lenses.

If I were going the D500 and Sigma 18-35 f1.8 would be my choice along with the SB 300 speedlight. I'd carry extra batteries for both as well as the respective chargers and plug adaptors. I could easily get all the important sights and activities without looking like a geeky tourist.

Well, Europe is a big place with any different photographic opportunities. Where are you going, specifically? What sort of image collection are you going to be doing? What is your photographic style?

I think this is like a European saying 'I'm going to the USA....'. Cities, landscape, street photography, portraits? Will you be visiting just ancient monuments (Stonehenge etc.) or visiting modern cities - center of Berlin, Docklands in a London?

It's going to be horses for courses depending on your aims.

I am leaving for my sixth trip to Italy tomorrow. I only have an A6000 (crop sensor) so my body choice is simple. Previous experience has been I always want wider (and faster) rather than longer. Also consider lighter rather than heavier. I expect most of my shots will be covered by my 18-105 which is not light, but very versatile.

One thing to remember is that those cute little medieval towns and villages have narrow streets with deep shadows on one side and blindingly bright on the other. Figure how you are going to deal with a wide dynamic range - exposure bracketing etc.

I'll play a bit of devil's advocate here as I think there is a slight bias at UHH to favor wider lenses. But the cardinal rule here really seems to be, "what do you like to shoot?" Personally I am not a fan of pictures of old buildings but love to shoot people on the street and particular details of old buildings. For me, I'd always pick the crop sensor with a lot of reach. Your 28-300 would be perfect for me but depending on what you like to shoot you may want the full frame.
