Jim, I think you just jinked all of us. Mine was showing r13 and after resetting to factory settings it went to r21. LOL I'm not touching it anymore. LOL
Ok, according to the manual for my D90. the "r"=The approximate number of images that can be stored in the memory buffer at currant settings is shown in the exposure-count displays in the viewfinder and control panel while the shutter-release button is pressed. (If r13 you have about 13 remaining pictures that will go into the buffer space. If you had r21, the buffer space would hold about 21 pictures at currant settings). Boy, am I glad you didn't jinks us. LOL All we had to do was look up the answer. Nikon D90, page 65. Hope this helps everyone.

My D200 shows "r21" when I press the shutter button half-way. I have never had any problems with this camera.

Maybe I am silly, but how did you ever notice what is showing when the button is depressed halfway? My eye is usually looking through the camera at that point :) Are there symptoms besides this that caused you to look?

Exactly. It is only a warning of how many remaining pictures that can be taken in the buffer zone. Just information.

The "r" message showing in the viewfinder indicates the number of shots remaining before the buffer fills. Normally this indicator would show the number of exposures remaining on your memory card but will change when shooting to indicate the number of frames that can be taken in continuous shooting using the current settings. This indicator may also show other info. The number can be increased by lowering the the resolution from L to M or S or switching to JPEG from JPEG+RAW or using JPEG normal.

Hi Jim,
I've been shooting digital Nikons for years and never noticed that message so I just took a few minutes and checked all of my cameras. They all did it! Here is each camera and the message I get:
D300 = r23
D200 = r11
Fugi S5 = r07 (built on a Nikon D200 frame)
I just learned something; thanks for bringing it forward. Take care & ...

You all have now gotten me to the root of the problem. What caused me to find the "r11" message in the first place.
I have a Nikon battery grip with 2 batteries. My most recent incident was when the camera refused to fire and I found that the left battery showed 100% and the right battery showed 0%. Charging the battery solved the problem. I didn't try reversing the battery. Maybe its a battery grip problem.

D200 is a great camera, hold on to it, repair it if necessary, will be a great back up for you when you up grade.
