Nikon r11 message

Several months ago my Nikon D200 began showing "r11" in the photos remaining spot. A quick search indicated that it means 11 shots available in the buffer space. I can't remember ever seeing the message before and now a half press of the shutter release always displays this message. Is it a problem or something I just didn't notice for 5 years.

Check to see if your long exposure noise reduction is on. I've read that can reduce the buffer space.

This came up a few months ago, and I remember that the answer had to do with the card buffer. I think it was a matter of how fast the card could save the images. Your situation sounds like something else, though. Did you try a different card or format the card in the camera?

Different card! Good call jerry. That could certainly do it.

Thanks guys. I format the card in the camera every time I upload to my computer. I have tried another card. The long exposure noise reduction is on, but it has been on since I unboxed the camera and did my initial setup. The main question here is do all D200s show this upon half-press or does it indicate a problem. I have had the camera mirror lock up on me and require a second press to unlock it (no exposure occurs) but swapping batteries or charging solves that. The lock up never occurred (even with low batteries) until the "r11" message started showing. This is a head scratchier for me.

Since it's something new, I'm thinking it's time to repair or replace.

Just tried my D200...shows r25 with half depression. Mode is JPG normal. I think that it indicates that the buffer will hold +/-25 images in continuous high speed shooting.

Yeah, I've been waiting for the D400 but the rumors keep changing. May have to bite the bullet and move up to FX with the D800.

That's one option. I'd prefer to wait and see what develops (no pun intended).

I am going to wait a little while. The 200 still works.

I do not believe you have a problem. I have a Nikon D70s which is almost the same vintage as the D200. If I set the "Quality" to RAW I'll see R04, set quality to Fine and I get R09, set Norm gets R12, Basic gets R19, Raw + jpg gets R04. I can't find any references to these codes in the manual but I think it's just Nikons way of reminding you what the quality setting is and how many pics can be handled by the buffer.

Of course! I just checked my D70s, and it does the same thing. I understood this to be something new for the OP, but I guess he just noticed it recently.

That's why I like this forum. There is an answer to every question - a solution to every problem.

my d-100 does the same thing though the buffer is smaller for raw shots i get 4 before buffer fills up. this is a standard feature on nikon dslr's. it has been doing it since the day it came out of the box!

Thanks everyone. I can't believe I missed seeing that for 5 years. What else am I missing? (No don't tell me yet, I'm not ready)
