I would be very cautious using a window mounted "tripod" for a heavy lens - you might shatter the window. I use something cheap and easy. Go to a hardware store and buy a 6' length of pre-split foam water pipe insulation for a few dollars. Cut it into shorter lengths and just slide it over the edge of the window and rest your lens on it. Cheap, easy and it allows you full motion with the camera.

I used the puffin pads then went looking for a bean bag. I found a different one to use in the car window. You lay the len on the bean bag wiggle it a little and it is rock solid

That's about the same as the LensCoat brand I have pictured above. If you don't need the plate the Vertex is cheaper as they make the plate optional. LensCoat includes it.

As Imagemeister pointed out, any wiggling can cause a shift in focus or zoom.

specters & manglesphoto answers is what I have beeen using for years. Already presplit and the center of the tubing is open. Can buy for 1/2" or 3/4" diameter pipe. I found the 1/2" to work best as it sticks tighter to the window. Very easy to remove when done. Sticks well even when driving (slow speeds). If your window angles downward towards the front, I would not cover this area to much as it try's to force it off of the window. I run the window up when moving and down when needed. It slides off very easy when not using.

The Promaster Clamper is excellent. Construct is best I've seen for its size & purpose and can be attached to almost anything from 1/8" to 4" in diameter or width. It's more expensive than the Alpen suggestion but more versatile. I've used it with my Tamron 70-300, attaching it to a small tree. Your car window lip or its door sill will both work. The 150-600 is very heavy and long. I think the Clamper will manage it if you use the door sill (frame) but, if you can, check it out at your camera store before you buy.

Due to medical issues and age (73), I am becoming very limited with my mobility. I find myself taking photos from my car, parking lots or road sides. Do any of you Hedgehogs have recommendation for a tripod that I can attach to my car window? I just order a Tamron 150-600 for my Sony A77ii.

Thanks,

One cheap way is to take a section of a kids pool noodle and cut some off, slit it, and set it over the window edge. Or fill a section of an old pair of jean's pant leg with beans or rice. Cut to desired length and saw the ends up. Or maybe just use duct tape.

If you know someone who sews, you can do what this guy did. He bought an old pair of kids jeans at a second hand store and had the legs shortened and sewed up as well as sewing the waistline after filling it with beans. It is a high tech bean bag that allows him to straddle the door as the photo shows, or he places it on the hood with the legs up and puts his large lens in the middle of the legs for stability.

I have an Alpen that works beautifully. Just be sure to turn off the car motor.

And the radio if it stays on after the car is turned off.

It is not recommended that you use your car window as a support. There is a very versatile tripod available called the "PakPod". It is made from ABS material and has stainless steel fittings. It can be configured to mount just about anyway and can be used underwater. It will support up to 11 lbs closed and 5 lbs open. In addition to being light weight, additional gear can be mounted on its rotatable aluminum spiked feet or a second PakPod can be attached. It is a slightly more expensive solution than the ones previously mentioned. However, the PakPod is much more adaptable, packable, and useable. You may check it out at http://www.pakpod.com/. As a disclaimer, I have nothing financially to do with PakPod and have no affiliations with the company. I am just a happy user.

It is not recommended that you use your car window... (show quote)

Do you have any pictures of it set up in your car?

From the video it doesn't look like it would be too convenient in a car, and they don't show it set up in one. It seems like it would do a number on my leather door panels.
