How many people write bad checks to local businesses,
how many people buy items only to return them after they are utilized,
How many people sell defective or stolen items.

How many sellers over price their items..
How many buyers are looking for a bargain..

The story is two sided, beware..and yet life goes on, emotion always seems to play a role,
'Anyone can stop payment on a check...and in some states a Money Order payment,,,

Cash only also have some issues. counterfeit bills. I used special pens in the past to identify fake notes. I bought this pen at Office Depot for $2. you draw a line on the note. If the note is fake the line turns Black otherwise it stays Golden-yellow.
I used eBay and PayPal all these years. No issues so far. eBay handles everything very well.

So that's how they scam you. They tell you they will pay a little extra if you will ship it to their friend in another state. It's usually a friend or their son or family member. They tell you they will PayPal the money. You agree and they PayPal you the money except an email comes to you the really looks official like it's from PayPal that someone deposited XXX amount of money and you think all is good. You send the item and later you log into your actual PayPal account and there's been no transactions at all.

I got something similar the other day that looked very official from Microsoft. Seriously, it looked very official. But I know that Microsoft would never send me an email telling me that my computer is corrupt and to click on their link and log into their site for a fix. You just need to use a little common sense.

Yes, fake emails, phishing emails, scam calls you name it. I get calls at least two times week that my computer has all kind viruses and they want me to allow them to get hold of my computer to clean it up. And arrest warrant if I don't pay IRS overdue taxes.

Me too! The problem is they are targeting the masses by stating that my Windows computer has issues. I say, "that is great but I only own Mac computers." "Click" is the only response I get as they promptly hang up.

The value of Craigs list is local buyers and cash transactions.

I wouldn't advertise anything valuable and have a potentially fake buyer come to my house to assault me, steal the item and possibly go through my house as well, or maybe come back and break in later. I used Craig's list a few times, always met the buyer out in the middle of my driveway, always got paid in cash and then started becoming a bit too worried about these things.

I haven't had any problem with eBay and PayPal, including buying used camera equipment from Japan.

Whenever I sell ANYTHING on CL it's a local sale, no mail, for cash only, no haggling, and I'm always willing to walk away from the situation. I bought a lens on CL and later sold it (on CL) for a $25 profit (which I spent on another lens!); I sold an old film camera on CL, I hadn't used it in years, the buyer said that a couple of the shutter speeds didn't work properly, I refunded the guy his money and got the camera back. It now sits on my shelf with some other analog cameras.

I've bought and sold several lenses on craigslist, but I have always insisted on meeting face to face. That way one can try the lens and if there is a sale, it's always cash only. I might take a little longer to sell, but it removes the aforementioned problems. And if I'm buying, I can see and touch what I might purchase prior to the sale.

Is anyone aware of any new scam going on craiglist.
I sold my camera on craiglist and this person is wiling to pay by paypal. I am wondering what could go wrong in this transaction or could there be a scam in transaction?

Scammers never use PayPal. The real PayPal. I've seen forged paypal pages sent by the criminal stating that payment has been sent, and the criminal hopes that you won't call paypal or check on their forged makeup page. And all you have to do is call paypal for verification of payment.

I've been hit so many times with these AH's, who say they will send you a cashiers check or Money order for a sum over your asking price, and when you get the check, you can then send the item. The problem is it usually takes up to 2weeks to discover the check is a forgery, and then your taken. It's almost the same scam all the time. And they never haggle over your asking price, wanting to pay more without asking.

I'm sorry, yes they do use Paypal. I'm living proof. I still owe Paypal around $2200 for a 5d2 that I was scammed out of. I get something from a bill collector every week.

Let me tell you how it went. I listed a 5d2for sale on ebay. somehow they accessed a legit account and paid into my paypal account. Being the naive idiot that I was {Didn't read the fineprint} I sent the camera to another address than the account one. I was a credit card virgin and didn't know anything about chargebacks. I was paid so thought buyer was legit. He said he was on a photo trip and needed the lens sent to where he was. So I stupidly obliged and then the real account holder says HWTF and I get the money withdrawn from my account So, I'm down a camera and $2200.

That's a new one. I guess anytime someone wants something sent to a different address, or even their address, you need to call and check out everything.

What happened to you was the scammer saw the sale, then sent a photoshop scanned pic of the buyer saying to send it to this address. Did the legit buyer really want it sent to a different address? It may have been the original buyer didn't want it sent anywhere different than his home address.

These crooks are really getting smart. I've seen them make up an entire website of products, then demand greenback, prepaid payments.
