For those that appear to think that they are safe by "only accepting cash," have you not heard of scammers paying with counterfeit bills? There is no shortage of low-life people out there, and they know all the angles tO cheat and steal. I suggest you do as I do and meet them at a bank where they can verify the cash is real, or at least equip yourselves with a counterfeit marker to test the bills yourself (can be purchased from Amazon).

No but there is one on EBAY. I recently posted an item for sale and received a text on my Iphone telling me that this person had purchased my camera and would I please send him an invoice with the tracking number if the shipped item. I contacted him and advised that I would ship i twhen the money was deposited into my pay pal account. He then asked me to ship to his son as it was a birthday present for him. His son lived in a foreign country and the buyer said he would pay an additional $150.00 for the trouble. I told him i would ship US only. He then stated that he would pay an additional $50.00 if I would use expedited shipping and send him the tracking number. There is more but long story short all this sounded a bit suspicious so I contacted pay pal and they had me send a copy of all th emails etc. They confirmed that it was a fraud attempt. Not saying all are dishonest but buyer and seller beware!!

Is anyone aware of any new scam going on craiglist.
I sold my camera on craiglist and this person is wiling to pay by paypal. I am wondering what could go wrong in this transaction or could there be a scam in transaction?

IMO to many scams, Only sell in person, in a public place. Also if it is an expensive item, meet inside a bank and deposit cash before you leave!! Otherwise use Ebay.

It will cost you a few percent to accept a PayPal payment. You can wait till you receive payment to deliver the camera. I guess he feels safer not bringing cash to the meeting.

One good thing about ebay is that they keep all correspondence, provided it's done on the ebay site. I never talk about a transaction off ebay.

Perhaps they don't have the cash and need to use a credit card. Or, an easy way to accumulate points for their next purchase! Paypal makes it an easy transaction.

Dandekar,

I was scammed our of a Canon 70 ~ 200 f2.8 on a Craigs List sale on the same sounding deal you are describing. If you'll send me a person note I'll be happy to share the details with you. Embarrassing that I could have been so dumb, but that's history after the Lens was gone.

Yep. The world is still full of scammers. Paying for something in counterfeit cash, in a previous thread, is a bit too much for me to comprehend. You would think it would be the safest method of any transaction. People have been murdered by ads placed by Craigslist selling items.

CASH ONLY! No exception. Not Paypal, not cashier's check, no "wait until the check clears"... they have scams that work with pick-up or shipping and all work together.

I buy & sell on craigslist. Best rules for these transactions either buying or selling......always, always, do the deal face to face. NEVER ship no matter what story you are told. Make all transactions for cash ONLY. Met in a public place, say a Starbucks, bank, or in front of a police station. Know what you are buying and all possible problems to look for. Abide by these unbendable rules and craigslist can be a great source.

I'd be very careful with more than person involved. I've had some luck with CL but just locally and with cash only. I'd be leery about this.
Yes PayPal is good but there is too many states involved causing a state of confusion. Go with your gut.

I have been using E bay and PayPal for many years and have bought a lot of stuff through them and I do mean a lot and have never had a problem with them, ever. My problem was with a few sellers, they would misrepresent what they were selling, E bay and PayPal would step in and resolve the
problem, I got my money back, always. They are both good at there word.

Thanks every one for the responses. Forgot to mention that camera advertised in Mississippi, A person from Texas contacted me and wanted to have it shipped to Ohio.

That worries me.

Big no no. Never ship to unverified address. You are only covered if you ship to verified address of buyer. This is a scam. The buyer has hacked a legitimate account.

To follow up on my previous answer. Everthing will look legit. You will actually get paid from the hacked account. You will send the item to scammer. He will have free item. Then you will get charge back from account owner and you will owe them money.

Good grief, lighten up! You can comprehend murder but not counterfeit cash? I'm staying away from your neighborhood!
