ALL of my caterpillar photos were taken with a Nikkor 105-mm macro lens. I challenge you to do as well with any standard or zoom lens, with or without extension tubes, an optical doubler, screw-on macro filter/lenses, etc.
A macro lens may be a waste of money for you, but not for me.
