Is there anyway to make an interesting photo of a cactus? I am on my way to Phoenix where I have been once before and couldn't do it then.
Thanks,

Close up, silhouetted against the sunset, taken during the "golden hour", someone sitting on a cactus.... can think of many ways. But the color in the bright sun, with the exception of close-ups of their spectacular flowers, can be washed out. Speaking of the bright sun - a polarizing filter might be helpful in getting more saturation in the colors.
Because of its shape it can imply 'pointing' to something. Find a cactus of the best shape and then wait for the right time when the moon is still visible, early morning late evening, and position the camera so that the biggest cactus finger is pointing to the moon. Some will hate it, others love it. The fun is just planning and doing it.
Thank you both very much. But who can I convince to sit on a cactus?

Lots of Cactus are flowering right now. You can look up types and locations on website desertusa.com.
Use Google Image Search for "cactus photography." You'll see examples of suggestions already made here (except for maybe the "sitting on" part
) and also
perspective. Don't stand and just point up or down, or straight on; find more interesting angles of view. If you can't go out at night or have quality light just after dawn or just before dusk, my vote would be close-up: think in terms of textures, colors, patterns, shapes - and depth of field (try extremely shallow).
Everyone knows what a "cactus" looks like, so move outside documentary and into art.
Do a search on Flickr for "cactus" will give you lots of examples.
And getting someone to sit on a cactus does not tip you off?????
The guy is already thinking way outside the box. Next post will be how to tie someone to a Joshua tree and how to get red ants to eat his subject alive.
That depends on how much you're willing to pay. I might be interested.

rmalarz may be using the mercenary comment about money to conceal he is a masochist.

Yes. Use your natural creative ability (if any).
Jim Bob,
Thank you for your very encouraging note.
