I rarely use flash and I am looking for one for Nikon D7000 .I would like recommendations for that would take advantage of TTL and be relatively inexpensive
Check the Nikon USA web site. Their refurbished stock is all 10% off today. I purchased my SB700 from them and it is an excellent flash unit.
Based on recommendations on UHH, I've purchased both Altura and Nissin Di866. They both are serving my needs very well along with several other flashes including some Nikon SB600. Take care & ...
I use a SB 600 with mine when I need to use flash.
It is powerful enough for my needs.

A SB700 or a used SB600 would be all you would ever need. I like to stay with Nikon, however there are some on UHH that like a few third party flashes.
+1. I use my SB600 more than my more expensive SB910.

I have two SB700's and they have worked flawlessly for 5 years
Have to agree with WayneT...
You can't go wrong with the Yongnu YN685.. it'll do everything you could want at a great price..

I use the SB-700 on both my D7000 and D750. Works great. I just need to learn how to use it as I get my fair share of under and over exposures only because I don't know what I am doing.

The yonguno is certainly less expensive, but un-tested by me. The SB-700, SB-800, SB-900 and SB-910 can all be had used/refurbished. Nikon has the SB-700 refurb on sale for just over $ 250 THAT ENDS TODAY. The newest version, the SB-5000 is $ 600. Best of luck
I shoot D90 and D600 Nikon bodies. When I need external flash I use one of my Vivitar 283s that I have from when I used to shoot weddings, events and crime scenes on film.
The SB400 is ok , but likely underpowered for general photography. I use one for macro where the flash is 8" or so from the subject. It's fine for that but won't recycle quickly enough for general photography, e.g, family get together...when shooting quickly.
I don't need "off camera" flash or "radio trigger" capability. I only need something that will light something up that's 100 feet away.
Camera is a D7100. Already using older Sunpak 555, but would like something that would work with TTL.

With radio control, you can be 100 feet away but you can place your flash much closer to the subject.

Maybe I wasn't being clear. In a photojournalistic type of environment, it is not possible to have the flash "closer to the subject". I need something with a GN of about 100. My old Sunpak has a GN of 150 (at ISO 100).
