Nikon has their instant rebate periods from time to time. Look out for that.

I have a D500 and have a tip. The video record button to the left and behind the shutter button can be re-programmed to activate Mode. Do that if you don't shoot video. You can switch between program, aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual mode quickly. Also program the Fn1 and Fn2 buttons.

Your knowledge of the D500 continues to impress! Keep those tips coming!

I've been a reader on your site for about a month. It has been so helpful, so thanks to all who contribute. I recently retired and rewarded myself with a Nikon D500. I'm hoping to buy a zoom lens so that I can photograph sporting events, inside (track meets, basketball games) and outside (baseball and track meets). I was advised to buy the Nikon 70-200m f/2.8E, as it would be best for the indoor photography. I'm in no hurry to buy this, as I'm still learning so much about the D500. Will that 70-20mm lens ever go on sale? I've followed B & H and Adorama, but their prices have remained constant. I notice that 42nd St Photo is selling it for $200 less, but I'm unsure of their track record.
Any advice that the readers can provide would be appreciated.

First, welcome to the site, second, stay away from 42 st photo, third, stay away from 42nd st photo, forth, the Nikon 70-200 is a great lens for what you want, the previous version can still be had from B&H and it is just as good, the newer version focuses about a foot closer, but for sports that does not matter to you anyway, and fifth, Nikon puts their lenses on sale about twice a year, spring and fall and sometimes around Christmas. But that sale is hit or miss, they don't tell you which lenses will go on sale and just a few do go on sale. Again I would look at the just previous model of this lens, it will do everything you want, that would be the G version, still offered new by bhphotovideo.com. It sales for around 2200.00 and has over 1000 positive reviews. good luck

Welcome to our forum!

It is very unlikely that the 70-200mm will go on sale, although Nikon does have rebates occasionally. If you want it, but it from a reputable dealer, one selling at the full price.

A good alternative is used or refurbished. Try KEH. I got a good deal on the previous version of that lens, the 85-200mm f/2.8.

A Nikon 20-200 f2.8 for $200.00. I would stay away from it used are new. A new 70-200 goes for over $2000.00. Take a look at the used ones for B&H, Adaroma and KEH.com.

KEH has a great rep with a lot of the pro's I know for selling used equipment. Check the used equipment prices at all 3.

I would suggest looking at a used or refurbished Tamron 70-200 SP 2.8 reviews show it comparable and some even better than the Nikon and the price much easier to swallow. 42st bad news

I have the Nikon 2.8,but right now, being somewhat familiar with Sigma vs Nikon comparisons,DXO,etc, the current rebates make the Sigma a no brainer in my opinion. Example: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/689579-REG/Sigma_589306_70_200mm_f_2_8_EX_DG.html

The Tamron tests/reviews are excellent or even better yet. Their 24-70 is also superb. It depends how brand conscious you are, coupled with your potential uses and how much money you want to tie up.

If you want the 70-200 and are not opposed to used, save some bucks and get the earlier VR, or VRII version. They are both of very good quality, and neither will disappoint. I have owned both, still have the VRII and have no need to get the E version. They focus fast, and yield excellent images. The only reason I switched from the VR to VRII was that I was offered more for the first lens than I paid for it a few years earlier! Then after going without for a few years, found a great deal on a barely used VRII. Paid under 1300 for it, USA version! Both lenses are tack sharp, and quick, silent focus. And the VR helps me get those handheld pics, even at my close to seventy age. I have owned many third party lenses, some were quite good, but many not so good. I would always choose a used Nikkor over a new third party if the price were any way near close. But the decisions are difficult as there is less junk offered out there with the new advances in lens and coating designs.

Its an exceptional lens for sure. But don't forget that Sigma and Tamron both have quality fast 70-200 lens as well.

Not in the same class as the Nikon but considerably less expensive.

Thanks for the tips. I know it's going to take time to fully appreciate all that the D500 has to offer.

Really, what to get depends on a number of factors. Not the least of which is how you intend to display the results. . Yes the 70-200 F2.8E nikkor is a superb lens, but is it overkill for your purposes ? Maybe best to rent possibilities before buying.

There are many reviews posted that say differently

I'll look into that option. It's great to have so many people offer suggestions. Although I've been using a camera for over 40 years, I've realized that I have a lot to learn.

I got mine from KEH for a little over $600. It was NOS - never been sold, so I was the first owner!

Thanks, Joe. I've never looked at other companies, but it sure makes sense, if the results are similar.
