Why not shoot B&W with your digital gear?

DuuUUhh. Naw, that's too easy to try and gives too much latitude for process to print. Then again I'm selling my Brownstone and going to live in a cave and draw on the cave walls by firelight.

i find that to be a fine idea. for the fact that i'm currently shooting with a yashica electro 35 (45mm, f/1.7) and its been doing me well, shooting in black and white. i suggest you pick up an electro gsn or gtn, they're very good and very affordable cameras. i got mine for 80$ but im sure you can be able to find one around that prince range.

Don't feel like you've fallen off the rails. I did the same thing last month. I went to school before digital was even a dream and learned more about photography using a 4x5 view camera than anything. Digital photography has been a wonderful tool for the art, opening it up to many more people. But, it has personally made me lazy and let the camera take away a part of the creativity of it. Even while shooting digital I kept a Canon eod1 film camera in the bag. But now I've sold all the EOS gear and bought a Canon F1 and an A1 with several FD lenses.I've always loved B&W and have dusted off the devoloping equipment and am going to get started.

Isn't it strange to spend so much time walking around, looking at things, zooming with your feet, setting up a shot (moving six inches to your right to get the flagpole out of the kids head), not to mention all that time determining exposure and (gasp) depth of field - and then to press the shutter button ONCE? I am honored that some of our younger shooters have offered advice on shooting b&w film with a camera without any kind of electronics. It may actually help that starting 60+ years ago as a pre-teen with an old TLR and a roll of Verichrome Pan will bring back memories of what it was like to take old-fashioned pictures. Now, I have to go out and find some more (possibly rare) 4 X 6 file boxes. If we're not careful, we might both end up with 4 X 5, 5 X 7, or 8 X 10 cameras, film holders and 90-200mm wide angle lenses!

If you paid $80 for your Electro, then you paid way to much! Unless you are certain it has been very recently taken apart, cleaned, adjusted and lubed by someone who knows what they are doing, you should not have paid more than $40 for it. Flea markets are full of Yashica Electros. Yes, they are fine cameras, but they are abundant.

You're probably right, but that is why people will travel hundreds of miles and spend years looking for something that everybody else will call junk - and probably find it at some second rate flea market or church rummage sale.

I know where we can find quite a few caves; in fact there's a national registry. Most of them are inhabited (see my avatar), but they're great neighbors. There may be some zoning restrictions we'll have to overcome, but for people seeking a partially agrarian life-style, there are almost limitless "crop enhancement resources" available.

Your shots will not be noticeably better because you spent so much on the Leica. Give the whole venture a try just by setting your digital equipment to B&W. If you don't have a prime lens, get one and stick it on the camera; don't take it off. (Give a trusted friend all your zooms for 2 months!) Then, shoot B&W to your heart's content! If after 2 months, you still have this hankering for the Leica, then go for it!

Nothing wrong with that. Lately, I've shot more film than digital. Same plan for the future. I also have a IIIf. It's a great camera. It's even more fun if you start processing your own negatives.

After years of reading and listening to the hundreds of discussions about the wonders of digital photography, I'm seriously considering making a major change:

1. Disposing of all my digital equipment (except my iPhone),

2. Purchasing either a Leica M2 or IIIf with a 35 or 50 f/2 lens, and

3. Going back to the basics of (black & white) film photography for a few years.

I thought I'd open the idea for discussion, giving everyone a chance to try to convince me that I'm even crazier than most think I am - or giving a few people the opportunity to submit encouragement. Buy the way, I'd rather have an M6 and 35mm Summilux, but there's no way I can afford it. So what do you think? Hijacks, insults and sarcastic comments are as welcome as is genuine input. Take your best shot.

I shot B&W and color film for years. I've had a darkroom in my kitchen, bathroom, and in a building in downtown Portland. I enjoyed working in them and once in a while I wish I hadn't sold all my darkroom equipment. Since going digital, my Canon F-1 has been neglected. Once in a while I think I might take it out and shoot a roll, but that's about as far as it gets. Someday....

I had an F1 and loved it. That camera and Kodachrome 64. Wow.

Can you buy a film body that take the lenes you already have? I have had the same thoughts and got myself a Nikon F3 that takes all my lenses. After a year now I still go to the digital 99% of the time.

What I think would be interesting is carry both for a while and take the same shots with both cameras to see how it affects your results. No cheating though - only take the digital shot when you take the film shot :-)
