I've thinking of making an unusual change

After years of reading and listening to the hundreds of discussions about the wonders of digital photography, I'm seriously considering making a major change:

1. Disposing of all my digital equipment (except my iPhone),

2. Purchasing either a Leica M2 or IIIf with a 35 or 50 f/2 lens, and

3. Going back to the basics of (black & white) film photography for a few years.

I thought I'd open the idea for discussion, giving everyone a chance to try to convince me that I'm even crazier than most think I am - or giving a few people the opportunity to submit encouragement. Buy the way, I'd rather have an M6 and 35mm Summilux, but there's no way I can afford it. So what do you think? Hijacks, insults and sarcastic comments are as welcome as is genuine input. Take your best shot.

I think you may be truly derailed!

Why get rid of digital? Just get the film stuff you want, and if you need the discipline, leave the digital stuff at home when you want to shoot film. At least for a year or so.

My problem is really which film camera to pick up and use when I want to!

Is the little red two seater sports car next, the male menoporsche?

I've been shooting black and white 35mm for a while now and just ordered the nessissary equipment to develop my own film, I should receive it Tuesday. I'll still be shooting digital, but I really love shooting with my old Nikkormat and FE.
I don't have the space to set up a proper darkroom, but I'm really looking forward to doing my own film, I have a quality scanner and printer that I'll use for printing.

I shot B&W and color film for years. I've had a darkroom in my kitchen, bathroom, and in a building in downtown Portland. I enjoyed working in them and once in a while I wish I hadn't sold all my darkroom equipment. Since going digital, my Canon F-1 has been neglected. Once in a while I think I might take it out and shoot a roll, but that's about as far as it gets. Someday....

I have my Hasselblad's and think about doing the same. But then the reality of $1.50 every time a click the shutter. So I compromised. I use my Hasselblad lenses on my digital cameras. I might actually talk myself into it sooner or later.

Sorry, but I support whatever fires your rocket. Its not a bad idea. I think every one should go back and shoot a roll of film from time to time (if they still have an old film camera). It keep one thinking how to get the shot when one only has 36 or 24 shots to do it in (instead of getting the shot in 64 GB of pictures). One of the most fun times I had with the camera club I was in was the yearly scavenger hunt. Everyone got a 24 exposure roll of film and 24 subjects to shoot. If one blew a shot, one had to decide which shot/subject they would scrap. It taught one how to come close to successfully shooting 24 out of 24 shots. It was a really honor to win the scavenger hunt.

It has nothing to do with MY shots.
Do whatever you want, it won't affect anybody else's photography in the least!
But why WASTE so much money on such an expensive camera?
Have you forgotten it has nothing to DO with the camera but the 12" behind it?
If you have a need for the attention to be SEEN with such expensive gear, then it's all the reason you need, you don't need our approval do you?
If you need approval, ask your wife, she's the only one that probably counts, who cares what we say?
Be a MAN, just buy it!
But remember, that especially with film, the camera is just a Box to hold the film. It won't matter one iota if that box costs $100 or $5000, at least not so long as you know how to shoot!!!

Has someone gone batty?

Seriously, you have gotten some good suggestions and comments. I have little to add. Though, why not a Leica M3? I thought that was supposed to be the "gold standard" for a basic 35mm film camera.

I bought a Canon D70 in Jan 2017. I have been learning only manual mode. I also have bought Vintage cameras and adapters for the lenses. I will shoot with the vintage 35 film cameras at times. What a great learning experience in my senior years.

Photography, like the rest of the world, has moved on. Mostly for the better. I would not go back to the darkroom. I think you are dreaming - as all of us oldies do from time to time - embrace the new world - you've lived the old one - it's gone.

Why not give it a try it could be great fun, and to include a smartphone is good thinking, provided you keep it charged.

Why not shoot B&W with your digital gear?
