Fabulous camera! I had a D70 that died so graduated to the D90. It was a definite cut above the entry models and much cheaper than the full-frame cameras. It went everywhere with me for about 4 years and produced many 20"x30" posters. I bought a D7100 when they came out and \my sister now has the D90. Someday a FF is in my future.

Welcome...I'm new here and this will be my first post. The d90 is one tough camera. Mine fell off a boat with me in about 3 feet of sandy water...it was about a minute before I realized my d90 was in the water. I found it by sliding my feet around in the sandy bottom. I then took the lens (a brand new Tamron 70-300) off and poured the water and sand out, pulled the battery...then let the camera sit in the hot Texas sun for a couple of days. Not expecting anything...put in the battery and turned on power...the led lit up. Totally amazed...I proceeded to clean the inside with canned air and a small brush...did a wet clean on the sensor. Once again...not expecting anything...put on a different lens and tried taking a picture...It worked!!! Only thing that doesn't work properly is the internal focusing motor...works fine with afs lenses. That was over 5 years ago...that d90 has been my kayaking camera since then. Other than a tiny fuzzy spot looking through the view finder...you'd never know the camera was in the water. The Tamron 70-300 lens was toast. The photos are great...even winning a few local contests.

Welcome to our forum!

The D90 was my first real digital camera. Start shooting on Auto, then try P. There is loads of free info available about photography and the D90 online.

Hi Abraham -

I just lent my daughter my D90 so she can take some nice photos of her little guy. This is a great camera. Don't undersell it because it is old. It can take sport photos at 5 clicks per second to freeze action, the video option is not bad either. I have taken some great photos with this camera.

My suggestion is to get Busch's guide to the D90 that will help you unleash it's full potential. Go here:
http://www.powells.com/book/david-buschs-nikon-d90-guide-to-digital-slr-photography-9781598639056/2-2

Also, about lenses, I have the following and would like to recommend the 50mm. Although not a zoom, it is fast and AWESOME.

Nikkor AF 18-35mm ED IF f/3.5-4.5D, retail $747,
Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm DX ED SWM VR IF, retail $646, and
Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8, retail $131

If you decide to invest in a lens, I would suggest purchasing a full frame lens. A full frame lens will work on the D90. It will also transfer if you decide to upgrade to a full frame Nikon. Love that about the Nikons...the lenses can be shared among family members and are swappable when you upgrade cameras. In the Busch book, he has a great chapter that explains the various nomenclature designations for the Nikon lenses, a great way to learn.

Good luck! Excited for you! ~ Eileen

The D90 was an excellent camera, and was the successor to the D80 which was my first DSLR seven years ago. I still use my D80 as a back-up for my D610, and it still works flawlessly.

The d90 is a very good camera. You can create some wonderful photos with it. Google for a book on it - I got one for my D90- and it helped me fully exploit all the things the camera can do. Enjoy!

My first ever DSLR was the D90. I sold it to a friend when I move up
to D800. I've used it a lot during my early years of touring and cruising.
Coupled with a good lens it will take good and sharp pictures. Wish I kept it.

Welcome to the HOG. Your english is fine. You will enjoy your time on the Hog, for the most part there are a lot of nice and informative people on here. There are also a few jerks as there are everywhere, but you will find them out the more you read here and you will learn to IGNORE them. This is the place to learn a lot about all photography questions you might have. Have fun and go out and shoot, practice is the one way and quickest to learn. I don't know much about the D90 but have heard good things about it. I think it came out originally at about $1000.00 so couldn't be too bad, so your friend was very nice to give you that camera. Enjoy

Tom
