If Canon’s gets bad reviews, probably one of the el cheapos from China would be better.
Are you looking for wired or wireless? I bought a cheap and cheerful Pixel Pro wired remote to take on vacation with me five years ago and it is still going strong, despite the abuse I give it. This remote got rubbish reviews, and when I took delivery it was cheaply made and felt more like a toy but then I did buy cheap - with the intention of using it solely for vacation use. The Pixel Pro is a top performer and does everything I need it to and more and I highly recommend it.
I recently bought a Yongnuo RF-603 wireless remote (to shoot birds with me in the lounge looking out the window and the camera outside focusing on the bird bath) and I have to say I am very impressed with this too. I haven't had it for too long, so I can't give a long term report, but my first impressions are good, it is a capable bit of kit and it seems like it'll last.
Try an aftermarket one. Fotodiox Brand makes one for about $16. From Amazon. Or you can pay more for the Name Brand.
Looking for wireless. Already have a wired but want to be able to move further from the camera.
More than one well known You Tube and Internet reviewer has recommended the third party brand wired and wireless flash and shutter triggers. I have one China via Amazon, Other than it taking forever to arrive, it has worked for me very well and included an intervalometer. The branded, low sales volume accessories like this from Canon have be excessively priced since the film days.

I have several of the Yongnuo 603 models, not only are they 300' range wireless shutter releases, they are also 300' range remote flash triggers. VERY dependable and economical.
Thank you everyone for your help. I feel more comfortable pulling the trigger and buying one after your responses.
Happy shooting!
I have a Vello Freewave Plus Remote for my Alpha 850 from B&H that works very nicely. They show 1 available for Canon for $59.95.

Had one on a older canon. I realized that the number of times that either the chord or built in timer could be used was 100%. Do you really need remote, it's one more potential for missing a shot. And I do 80+% from a tripod.

Look to vello freewave. I use it on my Nikon do not know about canon though.
Hello Nature Shooter,
I use the Phottix Strato 11 Multi (wireless)on my Canons 60D and 70D. It works great with a good distance. You can also hide it in your hand or under a table for group photos.
Good Luck
