Check out Tether Tools
and Alpine Labs also has a solution but for me it was not always a dependable connection.

You can tether shoot with your canon cameras easy enough, the shots will show on your computer in moments, but in order to see ANYTHING on a computer it must be downloaded to it.

Yes, sort of, Tether, if you mean in real time as you are shooting. Seems easy enough with Canon. Not sure about Nikon. Not a good option with many Pentax cameras. I had a tether program that worked OK with one camera but when I tried it with a different Pentax model it all crashed and nearly corrupted my camera's firmware. So never again with that project. And with my long length of experience with many types of cameras if I can't focus and compose using just my camera and lens, I have no business taking photographs. Tethering might be useful for a portrait or product photographer.

If you mean to just check for good or bad exposures? Why?

Yes, absolutely!! EOS Utility that came with the camera or you can download from Canon. Just did that very same over X-Mas. Tethered 5D MIII to my laptop. It's really easy!

Does anyone know if there is a way to connect a camera to a computer or laptop, so I can view a picture I just took without downloading. Sometimes its hard to tell if I have it focused sharp enough, even when I magnify it. I went through the instructions and couldn't find anything. I have a Canon 5D3 and 7D2 if that matters.

When I hook my camera to my pc I always have the option to view (in full size) all shots before downloading and can also choose which ones to download. I presume a laptop or tablet would give you the same option.

Chris,

Install the Canon EOS Utility that came with the camera on your laptop. Connect the camera (USB cable) to the laptop. Just follow prompts. It's really easy - almost automatic. Mark

Check out DigiCam Control. See http://digicamcontrol.com/. It's open source, free, and it's awesome. It tethers to your camera, recognizes it, and simulates the controls on the camera. That is, you can control the camera from the laptop - everything: shutter, aperture, ISO, shooting mode, focus mode, etc., etc.
