I have a pc with windows 10 pro - windows 10 was installed months ago, no problem until recently. I recently found out that my computer had been restarting without my knowledge, until one time I was in front of the computer and got the message "your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you" later discovered this happens many time per day. After some initial google search found that this problem is essentially the same as the famous windows "blue screen of death" with the apparent change that windows 10 catches the problem before damage is done & restarts the computer. Now for the question; have any of you encountered this problem & if so, what if anything did you do to correct the issue(s)? Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

We have eight PC's on Windows 10. Two regularly had this restart problem both being devices that were originally Windows 7 which we wiped and rebuilt with W10. In both cases this problem was hardware related; in one case a faulty memory DIMM, the other the hard disk.
The one thing not to do is use one of these 'registry fix' software packages which have a reputation of taking a poorly performing machine and turn it into an unusable one.

I bought a Lenovo desktop, took the free upgrade to Windows 10 and it did the same thing. I couldn't find exactly what was causing it so I shut the computer off and pulled the plug on it. I put the plug back in when I was ready to start the computer up the next day. After awhile, the problem went away by itself. I suspected it was a defective download but never took the time to find it in the registry. IF you do find it, please post what you found. Good Luck,
Regards,
Ted

I've had a problem like that, too. But it gets resolved without my doing anything but turning it off then re-booting.

It did teach me something, though: When working on photos in PS, I now save my work periodically just in case! Even if the computer does not have a problem, there is always the possibility of a power outage, or my one of my kitties could step on the power strip button and turn it off...

Over time I have had a number of tech support folks tell me that Malwarebytes causes problems. The last time I ran into a problem not the same as yours. I removed Malwarebytes and my system has not encountered that problem since. I was told that Malwarebytes does not work well with other anti-virus systems.

I'd start by going to Device Manager and checking for needed Device updates. Will take a while but you can do it while watching the football games this weekend. I bet that solves your problem.

In Device Manager, I see a list but no instructions for how to check for updates. Can you tell me how?

It has only happened with my laptop, not my desktop. I tried to replace my hard drive with a SSD, Brand New, no go, it kept rebooting saying it was trying to repair its self, formatted the SSD and tried again, NO GO, same problem. I then bought a 1tb mechanical HD, installation went off without a hitch. I think it is something about Dell laptops and their drivers, I had the same problem with another Dell laptop before, and it happens on the Windows updates both times.

Go to the left side of your screen, right on the start button, some icons will appear, one will look like a gear which is settings, click on it, then go to updates.

Thanks! I'm sure I knew how to do this at some time, but forgot where to look. Updates are automatic, mine are up-to-date, last checked yesterday morning!

My problem seems to be fixed. When I originally posted the problem on UHH I was looking to find out if others had the same problem & what they did to correct the problem. Well, after a few replies to my issue, decided that I was probably just being "lazy". So I did what a few UHH folks suggested. I conducted a windows 10 update from the Microsoft web site, then I updated all of the device drivers on my computer (what a long process! but fairly easy) Along the way I rebooted the computer whenever I was asked to.
All of this "SEEMS" to have corrected the problem. Before I did the correction listed above the computer "self-rebooted" every hour or two (eventually I decided to leave my computer on a program - Outlook for me so I would know if it had rebooted when I was away from the computer). Last night after the fixes the computer did not reboot the several hours before bedtime and I turned the computer off before going to bed ... same thing this morning ... computer has been running for about 4 hours - no reboots.

Again many thanks to everyone who replied with helpful hints and advise. All information was helpful, I learned a lot (even the information I didn't use for this particular problem is good to know in case of future problems) and most of all I feel like UHH folks are kinda like friends.
I'll inform folks if this fix goes south in the near future.

Usually a hardware problem, Win 10 has a problem with many networking components, its always good to get the latest drivers.
