I have a pc with windows 10 pro - windows 10 was installed months ago, no problem until recently. I recently found out that my computer had been restarting without my knowledge, until one time I was in front of the computer and got the message "your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you" later discovered this happens many time per day. After some initial google search found that this problem is essentially the same as the famous windows "blue screen of death" with the apparent change that windows 10 catches the problem before damage is done & restarts the computer. Now for the question; have any of you encountered this problem & if so, what if anything did you do to correct the issue(s)? Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

Sorry to say this is new to me. I've used every version of Windows since the first stable version, Windows 3.1. Windows 10 is the most stable error free and fastest version I've ever used. It has never crashed or forced a reboot due to problem. Sounds like the result of a misbehaving program. Are all updates installed? Are all drivers up-to-date? What are you using for internet security and antivirus software? Can you provide any additional info from when it forces a reboot such as the error code.. Are you using any really old hardware peripherals or very old software which may not be Windows 10 compliant? Can you determine when this problems started? A restore to an earlier time frame if you have a restore point set might fix it. I'll do a bit of searching on what you've provided so far.

Usually this is a driver conflict with some part of the OS. If you are lucky enough to have system restore enabled, reboot to an earlier restore point.

Being able to resolve it with a restore point would also depend on identifying how long ago the problem began.

I'm mystified. I am using Win 10 on six computers and have not experienced anything like that. I do allow Windows to update automatically so that I always have the latest malware and bug fixes. I also use Zonealarm and Malwarebytes to ensure that I'm free of those problems.

There are all sorts of things that can cause this. It could be a software problem, a stack overflow or something, or hardware related such as memory going bad. These intermittent things are hard to diagnose. If it doesn't happen frequently it may be a case of living with it for a while until a pattern emerges. If it happens a lot then running some diagnostics would be beneficial. How old is the computer?

I agree with all of you ... probably not a direct "windows" problem. Rather what has been said thus far ... outdated driver, memory problem & etc. Message: stopcode: critical process died

ms Outlook used for email, restore point not available, no recent newly installed hardware or software. Use avast, ccleaner for virus protection & junk removal.

How do I manually request windows to update? (on auto now)

Just checking if any of you ever had this problem, a place to start without reinventing the wheel. I will start by updating all device drivers, checking for program update, reseat all circuit boards & memory boards, etc.

probably should not have bothered you guys, but thanks for the helpful hints ... time to go to work on this computer.

What version number of Windows 10 are you running? There have been several major updates since introduction and they don't always update automatically. You can download a program from the MS website which will instigate the download and update to the latest version. I think it is called Windows 10 upgrade assistant.

I do occasionally experience this problem. My system is quite old, from 2010. I built it myself and have made various upgrades to SSDs, SATA 3, USB 3, blu-ray, power supply and so on. My system passes the memory diagnostics tests, I think I am just overloading the motherboard bandwidth with too much disk and so forth. It doesn't happen often so I've decided to live with it until I buy a new Mobo, CPU and memory, and that may not be for a couple of years given what is coming down the pike in the way of new tech. I do not think that this a Win 10 problem on my machine.

Good luck!

I'd start by going to Device Manager and checking for needed Device updates. Will take a while but you can do it while watching the football games this weekend. I bet that solves your problem.

I mean in more detail than just Win 10 pro, there have been several different significant updates. If you look under settings, system, about it will show you a version number. I think the latest big one was version 1607, meaning 2016 July, just after the free upgrade offer ended.

If you go to control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then event viewer, you can look through the logs and hopefully get a clue...

Just finished updating all device drivers, some already had the most current driver, some needed driver updated. Also updated windows 10 to most current update available. Will now wait awhile to see if the computer keeps rebooting or what I have done thus far has helped.
Will try the last suggestion after I find out about the constant re-boot problem.
Many thanks to everyone for your help, have learned a lot from all of you, very valuable information to keep in mind - thanks again. Will report the outcome.

Yes I have, turn the computer off, turn it on hit F10 ( may be different on your computer) then let it do a disk check. It turned out I had a problem with the disk, winders corrected the problem , it doesnt do that anymore. Of course now it has a new problem as of a few weeks ago. I wont go into it though.

I have had it repeatedly for a few day and then the problem mysteriously gets fixed. This has happened three times since I installed Win 10 on day 1. All three times were on a laptop that originally had WIN 7. It never happened on the desktop that came with Win8.

Although I was skeptical at first, I find WIN 10 to really be working out.
