Beyond a doubt mine is the Nikkor 24-70, f2.8.

What is yours?

24mm~105mm F4 (fixed aperture), BUT.... That's because I shoot the same subject matter for weddings and portraiture . I have faster lenses for inside low light situations where I need a faster lens. I use 70mm~200mm when i need to shoot at a distance to get candid shots. My 24mm~105 is my carry around lens.

So you are saying I think that you would go with 28-70 over 24-70 right? Although the 35-70 is also good and tack sharp. Thank you.

You don't get the bells and whistles and extra wide end of the 24-70's but you do get better glass and save a lot of money (the older ones are also no where as heavy). With what you save you can get at least one prime, if not two prime lenses or a bundle towards another pro zoom or something like the 200-500 or 150-600's made by Sigma or Tamron.

Wow I have been checking out the 35-70. Looks like a great lenss. Not too heavy, AF, and sharp. I might have found what I need.

You won't be sorry. Get one in very good shape, well worth it.

I use a Nikon 28-80 mm f/3.3-5.6. It is light and plastic and surprisingly sharp. It weighs only 7 oz where the 35-70 weighs 23.4 oz. It focuses fast and is incredibly sharp for an inexpensive lens. I got mine several years ago from KEH for $89. I sometimes carry it in a jacket pocket and have a 24mm or 135 mm on the lens. I would not pick up a heavy DSLR by this lens. Also it doesn't have an aperture ring. It works great on my D700.

KEH currently has one in excellent+ condition for $72. You really have to try this lens to believe it.

Anyone recently consider SLR direct?

Seems like a good deal for new lens.

There's usually a 28-84 equivalent lens, but it isn't resident on any DSLR.

A few points here you should consider. First, you are aware that it is a grey market lens. Nothing wrong with that as long as you are aware. Second, with all the discussions here about mail order buying and with little to no exceptions, anyone who has been buying camera equipment through the internet for any amount of time; and all who do so have the exact same opinions; why would you deviate from them. Honest and dependable sellers on the internet are: B & H, Adorama, KEH and Cameta. Why go elsewhere when not familiar with the seller yourself?

This is a good point, one that should be considered. When I purchase from a source that I am not familiar with, I also use a debit card from my bank that is not tied to my accounts there, but is a reloadable card. If hacked the only money they get is on the card, not my account. I just keep enough to make the transaction.

I shoot with Canon 7d. I used a Tamron 28-70 f2.8 for several years with excellent results. I always wanted a wider perspective and bought Tokina 12-24. Still not quite right. The Canon Canon 17-55 EFS fits perfectly as my GoTo walkaround lens for my cropped sensor camera. ~27- 88 mm equivalent on full frame camera much like the Canon 24 -70 f4L or f2.8 lens this is a very useful lens.

So, JD750, since your Post has been wildly popular at garnering numerous responses, are you going to analyze them, e.g. provide a Summary that lists what fraction of responders have a zoom vs prime lens attached and/or whether what (35 mm equivalent) focal lengths these lenses are?

Or is it that you expect those who are interested in knowing to read all 16+ pages to date and assess it for themselves?

Perhaps it's just the latter? But then that obliges me to wonder why you posted your question in the first place. I won't extrapolate from that. I'll let you explain, if you deign to.

Just curious.
